Dressage- a definition. Dressage-- a definition. Dressage is one of the three Olympic equestrian disciplines. It is a programme of suppling, balancing and obedience work that prepares a horse for future pleasure-riding or competition, Western or English. One of the most popular horse sports," combined training", includes a dressage test as part of the competition format. In dressage training, the natural movements a horse can make on his own, free in the pasture, are repeated as exercises. These range from simple patterns and circles at the walk, trot and canter to movements in extreme collection, such as the piaffe( which is actually part of the showing-off of the stallion). This mobilizing and strengthening of the hindquarters( which provide the motive power as if the horse had rear wheel drive) results in lightening of the forehand and a horse that is much easier to steer and to stop. It is a matter of physics; the horse's immense strength becomes more available to him as he uses himself more efficiently. Because of the obedience required in the exercises, this strength is also instantly available to the rider. These tests reflect the movements used in schooling and so, assess the horse's correct progress towards the goals of suppleness, balance and obedience. Tests are of increasing levels of difficulty, and range from Basic levels( within the reach of every horse and rider) to the difficult demands of tests at the International level. At the more advanced levels, you will see equine specialists( and dedicated riders), all athletes of the highest degree. Many have expressed the opinion that in the kur rides, the sport of dressage comes closest to the art of ballet. The Training Aid, The Sport, The Art compiled by the Ottawa Area Dressage Group of CADORA and revised in 1986 and 1994. The Amazing New Dressage Test( For Horses Unsuitable to Become Anything).

This page is about me, the way I came in contact with the lusitano breed, why I love them and about my horses here in Denmark. It's also about my interest in the Lusitano and it's use. But the thing I love in particular- is their huge ability to be collected and therefore, the high classical dressage exercises. Your contact person are Eva Ørndrup, regarding buying and contacting the Lusitano breeders Rex& Lee Henry. My boyfriend and I hope to be breeding both Lusitano as well as Pura Raza Española( Andalusians), in the future here in Denmark on our: The Iberian Farm( our stud farm yet to come). I’ ve learned about the Portuguese horse, through the Internet. When I came a cross the International Andalusian and Lusitano Horse Association( IALHA, USA), I wrote them an E-mail, asking about the breeds and where I could get some more information. more useful, because they usually is breed for a particularly working purposes. with the Lusitano( or vise versa), mainly because the offspring’ s could not be in either the Portuguese or the Spanish studbook register, and why should I, they are both magnificent horse breeds. That is also why I find the Iberian horse so interesting, it is ridden in balance and harmony, in for example a very high level dressage or just ridding. After seeing all these magnificent Lusitano for 3 days, I especially feel in love with a 4 year old stallion– Jerezano. We saw their stallions Xiwara, Leon, Nador and Jerezano at The Morgado Lusitano Training Center( in Póvoa de Santa Iria). Leon was shown under rider training: gallops-changing, passage and starting movement in piaff. Nador has just started his training and we saw Xiwara( age 20) performing in the Morgado Lusitano show. Then we saw some of their mares, on another farm( Casal Branco, in Almeirim) where they have used Xiwara as breeding stallion. We especially noticed the 3 year old filly Oriana, from Alteza, they are planning to train her for riding and show her under saddle next year- she shows promise for dressage. On this my second visit to the land of Lusitanos, I went back without any doubt that I will get a Lusitano for breeding and classical dressage, some day. I hope to promote the Lusitano, with this homepage and with helping eventual Lusitano buyers to my contact, Rex& Lee Henry in Portugal. Beside that, they have another quality– their education in Portugal with the traditional classical dressage, bringing the horse in balance and collection, really brings out the best in these horses. Lusitano and Portugal and they have now being breeding top class Lusitano horses for about 20 years, in Portugal. And the older colt Nador, he's the full brother of the winning dressage stallion Jerezano, was trained at Morgado Lusitano Training Center. The brood mares are Alteza( white) and her daughter Hazarra( black) they are both approved for breeding and registered in. the APSL- Associacäo Portuguesa de Criadores do Cavalo Puro Sangue Lusitano studbook registry. Alteza is the dam of Hazarra and a 3-year-old filly Oriana( Xiwara& Alteza) and the 2 years filly Panda( Xiwara& Alteza).

The 1998 stallion licensing of the Oldenburger Warmblood Association became an historic event. The champion's laurel was received by Royal Dance, a gorgeous liver chestnut stallion by Rohdiamant x Donnerhall. Dressage 2000, the official Belgian semen distributor of Oldenburger stallions, presented in co-operation with the stallion stations Vorwerk and PSI, a most elite collection of dressage sires in Welkenraedt, Belgium. Double Olympic Champion Nicole Uphoff presented Relevant and Friedensfurst, Dr Reiner Klimke rode his Trakehner, Biotop and Karin Rehbein showed her 17 year old Donnerhall( who recently retired from the international show circuit. Highlight of the stallion show was of course Royal Dance himself and his sire Rohdiamant, who received a standing ovation under the loud clapping of the audience. Elaine Sulser. When I graduated from college in 1987, may parents gave me the down payment for my Paint horse Mac. We have had several years of successful showing including winning 7 high-point trophies and finishing 7th in the nation in the APHA OCAP program in 1991. I started Sulser Saddlery after I picked up a piece of scrap leather at my neighbors house and tried to copy my Stubben saddle.

Critique& Compare# 5: 6 year old Morab Gelding, Cimarron, in the Trot Shoulder-In. This is my 6yr old Morab gelding Cimarron. The picture is of us attempting shoulder in last week. Each dressage movement has one specific camera angle that is the most informative one and that shows the movement off to the greatest advantage. In terms of the footfall sequence, the best moment is when the inside hind leg reaches forward, just before the suspension phase, because this shows the degree of engagement best( everyone who has ever tried to take performance pictures of riders knows how difficult it is to catch just the right moment). Starting the analysis of the picture with the horse, following the elements of the training pyramid, we can say that the horse shows good rhythm, as the diagonal pairs of legs appear nicely parallel. The horse's quiet tail carriage as well as his calm eye and flopping ears indicate that he is mentally relaxed and happy in his work, which is so important, because only a mentally relaxed horse can be physically relaxed- and only a relaxed horse is open to learning. The physical relaxation seems acceptable, as there are no big resistances visible in the poll, neck, or back. The only thing that can be criticized in this respect is that the haunches are still lacking in elasticity. In other words, the lightness as a function of self carriage still has to improve, which I will explain in the following paragraph. Schwung/ impulsion is the fourth element in the training pyramid. The resulting backward-downward stretch of the lumbar back muscles will lift the withers and elevate the neck, i.e. the neck will stretch forward-upward in a beautiful arch, which in turn will increase the shoulder freedom considerably. When the balance is achieved, when the hind legs carry at least as much weight as the front legs- in other words, when the horse is in self carriage-, the head and neck position will be correct, and with it the rein contact as well. Therefore, always improve and correct the rein contact by addressing the hind legs. The final element, collection has already been addressed, so I will merely summarize that the horse's high croup carriage indicates a lack of flexion of the haunches, i.e. To prevent misunderstandings, I want to explain that collection is not a bipolar opposition, something that is either completely present or absent. In classical dressage, collection is defined as flexion of the haunches. This flexion can come in many different degrees, resulting in corresponding degrees of weight assumption by the hindquarters. A certain degree of flexion of the haunches is necessary in order to accomplish balance and relaxation. Naturally, the degree of the flexion of the haunches is much smaller in a younger, less trained horse than in a very advanced horse, but it has to be present nonetheless. Having evaluated the horse, I want to turn to the rider, and try to correlate the rider's seat with the horse's way of going. The first overall impression is that of a relaxed rider with a more or less correct body alignment. The closer the stirrup iron is located to the heel, the more it restricts the free movement of the ankle joint. Since ankle, knee, and hip form suspension system, a shock absorber, in form of a spring, the elasticity of the rider's seat depends on the elasticity and unhindered range of motion of all three joints, especially the ankle. The rider's torso is more or less straight, she is not leaning forward, which is extremely important. The whip is resting approximately on the middle of the thigh, which is exactly where it belongs( unless we ride with the reins in one hand, in which case the whip is held upright in front of the rider's body). One is a sequence of two pictures of Philippe Karl on his Andalusian stallion, Odin, from his book on long reining, and the other one shows Felix Buerkner on Lausbub in the trot on a single track. In Philippe Karl's pictures I want to point out the excellent even bend from ears to tail as well as the reach of the hind legs, which is especially visible on the right, where the inside hind leg is reaching forward and crossing slightly in front of the outside hind leg. In Felix Buerkner's picture it is especially the correlation between the rider's seat and the horse's carriage that I want to address. This lack of muscle tone and stretch makes it impossible for the rider to engage her horse's hindquarters, which leads to the high croup and the overflexed head and neck carriage. Consequently, the centers of gravity of horse and rider are very well aligned, creating the impression of harmony and unity. Buerkner's stirrups are relatively short, which lends more stability to the overall seat. The engagement and flexion of the haunches thus not only creates a balanced horse, a swinging back, a relaxed top line and poll, as well as a correct head and neck carriage. Ultimately, it also creates the shoulder freedom, because the horse stretches forward-upward, instead of leaning onto the forehand. In order to achieve a balanced, uphill carriage, the rider in the C& C entry merely has to stretch her knees and heels more down, which will pull her seatbones more forward in the saddle. Then she has to increase the muscle tone in her torso by tightening the abdominal muscles and by pushing her shoulders back and down. Good exercises to improve the engagement in the shoulder-in are transitions between halt, walk, and trot within the shoulder-in, as well as shoulder-in/ volte or shoulder-in/ travers combinations. DR-005 DRESSAGE CLINIC. : Christine Stuckelberger. This Olympic Gold/ Silver medalist, winner of many world cups and international competitions, and winner of 12 Swiss national titles uses FEI riders to underline the importance of basics and a correct and effective seat. Addresses all exercises and explains classic training methods. Slow motion and graphics aid her careful analysis of conformation and movement patterns in a complete range of horses. From her personal story of finding her Olympic mount to her examination of a yearling prospect, you will learn how to recognize quality and identify potential through the eyes of a seasoned Olympian. Continues her discussion and demonstration of transitions, and also covers levels, piaffe, passage, and stretches. This American Olympic bronze and Pan American gold medal winner demonstrates the philosophy of dressage. Explains and demonstrates what the judge is looking for in a dressage test from basic Training Level through Grand Prix. Includes techniques to achieve nonverbal communication by use of seat, leg and rein aids to produce accurate ring figures, symmetrical circling, suppleness, and smooth, obedient transitions. Demonstrates all aspects of dressage from an eventing point of view. Includes the horse's initial training, the position of the rider and importance of the correct use of aids, equipment, and medical points. Covers what the rider wants to achieve in respect to the three walking paces on one track, then progresses to two track gymnastic exercises( shoulder in, travers and half pass). Finally, demonstrates tempo changes, piaffes, pirouettes, and passage movements. Stresses the fundamentals, including demonstrations of lunging techniques, rhythm and suppleness, rider's aids, and beginning competitive skills. Emphasis is given on the use of the corner, transitions, preparations for movement, rider's attitude, accuracy, and placing ahead. Addresses the motivation of riders, their relationship to their horses, and what it means to call oneself a horseman. Olympic Dressage Trials help make this tape a real treasure of information. DR-020 UNDERSTANDING DRESSAGE, VOL 1, BASIC ASSESSMENT. He believes that a rider must understand his horse's natural way of going and be aware of its individual problems and weaknesses. In this video he rides three very different young horses in order to demonstrate weaknesses to make the viewer more aware of how they might improve their own horse's balance, rhythm and tempo. DR-021 UNDERSTANDING DRESSAGE, VOL 2, INTRODUCING LATERAL WORK. Introduces lateral work and applies his theories to different problems as he works on improving the horse's dressage. These exercises include half pass, shoulder in, traverse, and the added collection necessary for their execution. Valuable information regarding proper attire at different levels of competition, warm up ring procedures, and what is expected of horse and rider. For those who are serious about dressage but must spend most of the time on their own, without the supervision of a daily trainer. This video is very helpful in showing how to correct and improve horses. This active judge and instructor of dressage trainers gives a good definition of putting horses on the bit. Presents the mechanics necessary for achievement, as are often encountered problems and their solutions. Defines this schooling exercise and its performance movements. This licensed Bereiter from Germany is an active instructor, competitor and USDF bronze medalist. Focuses on developing the trot by use of correct techniques and implementation of exercises. This USDF bronze/ silver medalist incorporates the requirements and importance of a good halt while addressing improper halts. Offers the elements and aids used to achieve this movement. Shows how to educate the horse for performance of the pirouette and resolve problems. DR-036 CANTER WORK& FLYING CHANGES. This member for the 1984 Olympic Team, long listed for the 1986 World Championship by USET, and USDF silver/ gold medalist focuses on types of canter work from working canter through collection, medium and extended canter. Illustrates the training and teaching of the piaffe and passage movements. Focuses on the instruction and schooling of shoulder in, haunches in, haunches out, and half pass to collect, engage hindquarters and supple laterally. This AHSA dressage judge and former staff member of Morven Park Institute teaches the development of shoulder in and brings to light the importance and necessity of this lateral and schooling exercise. This active instructor, judge and competitor from Germany shows the acquisition of the essential balance, relaxation, feeling, and influence that characterize a good seat. Demands are increased to full pirouettes and flying changes up to two tempi. DR-050 THE DRESSAGE TRAINING I, FROM THE BASIC TRAINING OF THE YOUNG HORSE. He believes basic training creates a basis for further training. Shows how the horse learns to cooperate with the rider and becomes obedient to enable it to go loose, tactfully, enthusiastically and straight. Dressage a French word for" training," describes the process of schooling a horse to respond obediently and effortlessly to its rider's commands. Competitive dressage is judged on how well entrants perform certain movements,( much as a figure skater is scored on compulsory movements) while exhibition dressage is the spectacle of the ultimate communication between horse and rider. A horse moving free is in natural balance and cadence. Collection and extension( shortening and lengthening stride), even bends, and smooth transitions between gaits are the foundation for any type of riding activity. Like figure skating's compulsory figures, dressage tests require movements and gaits to be performed in certain sequences. The exhibition of" haute ecole"( High School) dressage has been made famous by the Spanish Riding School, whose Lippizzaners perform spectacular" airs above the ground" leaps and bounds. Horses from Spain went to Vienna, Austria in the sixteenth century and founded the Spanish Riding School, world renowned for its spectacular dressage presentations. For more information about dressage, visit the United States Dressage Foundation home page. Original Artwork by Kentucky Horse Park Artist-in-Residence, Boguslaw Lustyk.

TRAINING FOR COMBINED DRIVING. Throughout our driving career, Laddie( Dun Laddin) and I have been fortunate enough to learn about combined driving from Larry Poulin, 3-day event riders, other drivers and plain common sense. As you know, combined driving is similar to combined training in that it has phases: dressage, a marathon( with hazards at the end), and cones. The suppling exercises, lateral work, collection and extension in dressage are best taught to the horse under saddle. I found dressage work under saddle a wonderful challenge, and to this day Laddie competes under saddle at recognized dressage shows. Care must be taken on working collection not to lose impulsion or stiffen the back, and, as always, rhythm and regularity must be maintained. The American Driving Society dressage tests give a wonderful outline of training progression in all expected dressage movements from training level up. Interval training with aerobic and anaerobic work are major components of marathon training. Consult another driver, event rider or veterinarian for specifics on conditioning. As Laddie reached Advanced Level, he was worked for an hour under saddle in the morning and two hours in harness in the afternoon six days a week. Once a week he was stressed and approached the marathon distance. It will tell you when your horse switches from aerobic to anaerobic conditioning, and you usually can foretell any lameness or other problem by a sudden increase in heart rate especially if you are doing the same work as the day before. I learned to judge speed and distance while conditioning by driving my car around the area I trained around and marking off the kilometers by hanging surveyor's tape from trees and bushes. Work on hard roads is necessary also to strengthen tendons, ligaments and bone density. A well conditioned horse's body will take on the appearance of a greyhound or runner, more than that of a body builder. Work your horse quietly and fluidly through the obstacles, choosing different turns and routes each time. As he accepts this, make the spaces smaller and add unnatural objects, such as flags, painted cows, tires and natural objects such as corn stalks, a grove of saplings. Depending on the level of competition, these cones can be from 50 centimeters greater than your carriage wheel track to 20 centimeters at Advanced. At home practice driving cones at least five centimeters closer together than the width you will be competing at. Always drive through the middle of the cones and as straight as possible.

Andalusian in Competition Dressage. The Andalusian in Competition Dressage. All you have to do is look up the definitions given in the Webster's Universal Dictionary for these three words- dressage, competition and classical. Dressage- the training of a horse in deportment and obedience. Competition- act of competing; rivalry; a contest in skill and knowledge; a match. Classical- influenced by, of or relating to ancient Roman and Greek art, literature and culture; traditional; serious; refined. In the United States, when most people speak of the Andalusian, they are referring to both the Pure Spanish Horse of Spain and the Lusitano of Portugal. Still, in the United States, you will frequently see the name Andalusian be connected to the Pure Spanish horses, since it is more correct to call the Portuguese horses Lusitanos. And that is where you'll find a major difference between the Andalusians and today's modern sporthorse, the latter being what competition dressage was designed around. They needed heart, courage, strength and a high degree of collection for fighting the bulls and excelling in the very fundamentals of classical horsemanship that are studied today. In the( now popular) historical books on training, you can see these horses being trained in a variety of high school movements and airs above the ground. This training was very serious, suitable for royalty and often considered a true art form. And if you haven't noticed, the horses used for this training have always had a high degree of Spanish( or Portuguese) blood in their veins. Notice I say" dressage" arena, not" classical dressage" arena. The competition was divided into tests, which were shown at different levels of training. Some people will prefer the look of low, extended movements of which the warmbloods excel and others will prefer the higher, more collected movements of which the Iberian breeds excel. Many people believe it's easiest to achieve the ultimate in lightness with the Andalusian rather than the warmblood. The knowledgeable trainer can train either horse to be just as light in his hands and aids, yet the Andalusian will typically make it look more eloquent and effortless, since they are built so balanced and naturally able to collect easily. As far as dressage goes, I feel they are able to show their wonderful abilities best in classical dressage rather than competition dressage. They do just fine in sport already, many showing their superiority in extreme combined driving competitions. If you show your Andalusians in dressage competitions, don't be discouraged by judges low scores in areas of extension or freedom of movement. Just an added note- there is now an opportunity for owners of baroque horses such as the Andalusian to compete in dressage competitions designed for them and their natural ability to collect.

There is endless interest in the tolt. The tolt is a four-beat lateral gait in which there is always at least one foot on the gound. Clean tölt( tölt, hreint tölt, single foot, rack), with perfect four-beat. It becomes more up-and-down to sit on, and it's a mixture between tölt and trot. It becomes more from side-to-side to sit on, and its a mixture between tölt and pace. So that the horse can tolt well, it needs freedom in the withers( that is why you move the weight backwards and encourage speed so that the horse powers from its behind, and that is also partly why goey horses are popular in Iceland, this is more natural for them). You do not want the horse to raise it’ s neck without collection, that just results in an eve-neck and bad or no tolt. Keep though in mind that tolting for long distances on asphalt is straining for the legs of the horse. If the horse is either tense and stiff because of nervousness, or simply stiff because of lack of being athletic and trained, it tends to go in pacy tölt. If the horse has a short neck, that is set low on the withers, has straight( vertical) shoulders, a stiff( straight) back, low withers and tall croup, a very sloping croup, all these things increase the tendency of pacy tölt or piggy-pace and make it more difficult to clean the tölt. If the saddle pinches the horse, or lies on it's wither, thereby inhibiting total freedom in movement in the shoulderblades, the tölt has a tendency to get pacy. Remember that collection in tölt does not mean the same as collection in dressage, look at pictures of a good tölter, the horse is moving freely and keeping it's balance, carrying it's head itself( you shouldn't be be carrying the head with the reins). A pretty palomino, in perfect collection, engaging it's behind( pushing itself forward with the" motor" in the hind legs). Stopping the horse collected also improves the engagement of the hind end of the horse. Ride the youngster only for short distances in tölt( even just a few meters at a time) while it is learning, tölting is straining while the youngster doesn't have balance. If this doesn't help for a certain horse/ rider combination, it is better to be glad riding the horse in pig-pace, rather than getting frustrated by repeating, failing experiments. Usually what is happening when a horse rolls is that one side of the horse is weaker than the other, so that the horse has a tendency to take larger steps with it’ s stronger side, thereby rolling. Try to find your horse's weaker side, is it more difficult for it to tolt to the right or to the left? Do exersises like sidestepping, turning on the forehand, trotting in sircles etc to strenghten that side, if you find much difference in how strong the sides are. Training Víxl out of a horse demands a very careful rider. The horse is tense, so tension must be avoided, and crude aids. Reins must be used extremely carefully( holding them steady, not giving any unnessary clues). In competition in Iceland it is forbidden to use more than 10 mm thick shoes and 250 gram( 8 ounce) heavy boots, and using more in training is frowned upon. Weights, whether you are talking about boots or shoes, cause the foot of the horse to take longer steps and bigger steps than a foot without weights. But it is often helpful to use heavier shoes for maybe a two months period, to help the rider to clean pacy tölt, instead of endless work with the reins, seat etc.

If you have ever published an article or book, you are familiar with the roots of html, because your editor used publisher's markup tags in editing your manuscript. A hypertext reference( or" link") is a special tag that tells your computer to go to some other other document which is addressed in the tag. Simply enter the address of the document in quotation marks into the bracketed tag, thusly:. By clicking on the blue text with your mouse pointer, you activate the tag and your computer will link up with whatever d ocument you have addressed( if your address is correct!). To enter an active internet address into your message, simply type the bracketed address, as in the example below. You are typing a blistering follow-up reply t o a previous comment by Horus. In conclusion, if Horus had consulted the photograph at the University of Virginia's art history collection a. acropolis picture/ a, he would not have asserted that the acropolis had a green asphalt shingle roof!.
