His pedigree, carrying Corrado I, Cor de la Bryere, Capitol, Moltke, Perser xx and Doktor is like a fairy tale- these names have many times been represented by World Champions such as 1988 Olympic Silver Medalist; Corlandus( dressage), 1992 Olympic Gold Medalist; Classic Touch( showjumping), 1996 Atlanta Olympic Silver Medalist Calvaro;( showjumping), Two Times German Champion; Mosquito( showjumping), World Cup and Bronze Medal German Champion; Capriol( showjumping), Two Times Champion; Calgary( Federal Endurance Event), Event Champion; Contrast( eventing), and the list goes on. Corrado USA is the first son of Corrado I to sire and pass on this combination of genes within the United States and he embodies some of the greatest modern sport horse blood from Europe, excelling in all disciplines. From the English translation of the book- Selected Sires Of Germany:. Referred to as an" Idol In Holstein", Corrado I achieved the best jumping index of his test lot( more than 137 points) at his stallion performance test. He achieved 10 points twice( loose jumping and aptitude for jumping in training). But he also achieved outstanding results for canter and rideability( rideability 8.0 twice). In 1991,( as a 6 year old, Corrado I competed in the Federal Championship for Showjumpers in Germany.; Aachen and Frankfurt, as well as being the German Champion in 1994. Corrado I has won over 500, 000 DM in his career and is consistently mentioned as one of Cor de la Bryere's most important sons in addition to having the highest competition earnings of any Cor de la Bryere offspring. Corrado I s sire is Cor de la Bryere( Selle Francais) imported to Holstein- a true living legend in Europe. He is on the eternal top10 sires list and is a true Sire Of All Disciplines- Top International Dressage, Eventing and Showjumping winners( with an incredible jumping bascule). Cor de la Bryere is featured in the Ausgewahlte Hengste Deutschlands-Gold Cover-2000 edition( Germany's Yearbook Of Stallions containing all breeds) in a spread of 20 pages. At 11 out of these 13 sites, Cor de la Bryere blood is represented at least once and up to 4 times at one site marking the extraordinary influence Cor de la Bryere blood has in German Warmblood Breeding. Corrado I s dam sire is Capitol I,( Holsteiner) another World Class Stallion, who is the sire or dam sire of many Top International Showjumpers. According to the breeding value rating by the FN, Capitol is one of the leading sires of Showjumpers in Germany today and is one of the few lines that carry the blood of Cottage Son xx. K-Morelle( Westfalen) is well known in Germany for her long and accomplished successful career in all three disciplines; Combined Training and Grand Prix Jumping. Moltke is considered to be" The Great Sire Of Rideability" in Germany and Moltke left quite a number of Top International Show Jumpers in Germany after only 2 seasons in Holstein. Rideability of the choicest quality, vitality and physical strength is what the name Moltke is synonymous for. K-Morelle's dam sire, Perser xx is renown throughout Germany and his blood is found in the Hanoverian, Holstein, Oldenburg and Westfalen breeds. Corrado USA descends from Generations Of Excellence. Corrado USA successfully competed for three years at the WEF in Florida under Margie Goldstein-Engle. As a six year old in 1999, his competition level was stepped up and Corrado USA was entered into the Open Jumpers at" A Rated" shows to accomplish his sport test requirements for lifetime breeding licensing into Stud Book I with the Rheinland Pfalz-Saar International and the Oldenburg N.A. With First& Second Places, Championships and Reserve Championships to his credit Corrado USA has proved himself as a competitor in a grand and decisive manner- a great accomplishment at this level for a six year old. Still a very young stallion just turning seven years old in May of 2000, Corrado USA has come home to Illinois and is now in training with Bill Clements at Tempel Farms in Wadsworth, Illinois to pursue his talents in dressage. We look forward with much excitement as does Bill Clements to the development of this young and extremely gifted. With a variety of very different mares each year, Corrado improved each mare and stamped his offspring. The foals represent the modern sporthorse type and with consistency inherited his springy, fluid, powerful movement, strong back, powerful hindquarters and love for jumping. The foals also exhibit intelligence, grace and good looks with a generous and friendly temperament. To date, Corrado USA has achieved a 57% rate of Premium Ia scoring foals. This year we intend to look at other registries in addition to those he is already licensed with. pictures last updated 4/ 17/ 00( new pictures& faster loading). • Abstract:
Document Excerpt: Bahadur's Homepage. 1991 Black Shagya Stallion. Bahadur shows in Novice Eventing and 3rd Level Dressage. The black Shagya Arab stallion BAHADUR was born in 1991 at the BAHATI stud in Himmelried, Switzerland. BAHADUR s sire, the black HEROLD descends from the stallion of the century, the grey GAZAL VII, who after leaving the State Stud of Babolna( Hungary) at the advanced age of 27, still served a great number of mares in Northern Germany and thereby became a prominent sire in the warmblood breeds( such as the Hanoverian). BAJGALA s sire, the original Arab IBN GALAL came from the Egyptian State Stud El Zaharaa and was used in the Babolna breeding program before he was sold to Germany where he too became an important sire, mostly in purebred Arabian breeding. With over 20 generations his pedigree goes back to the original purebred Arab mare 74 TIFLE who came to Babolna in 1816. BAJGALA s dam, the O BAJAN I-17, came from Denmark as a two year old to the BAHATI stud where she produced many excellent offspring for the Swiss breeding program. BAHADUR was selected for breeding in 1995 and was given his Stallion Performance Test I on grounds of his outstanding sport results in the season 1997( several firsts and placings in eventing, dressage up to level L and jumping). Fieldtest: Conformation and movements mark 9, Shagya Futurity Champion in Dressage, selection for breeding. 1996: National Training Test: Winner( conformation 10, jumping 8.1), Finals national Promotion Dressage, first CC placings, many dressage victories, Shagya European Champion in Dressage. 1997: CC National Final Promotion, Arab of the Year 3 rd place, Shagya European championships 2 nd place. 1998: CC National Finals 2 nd place, Big Horse Trials in Germany 4 th place, some victories, also international, in Dressage. All these performances were achieved mostly in warmblood horse competitions. BAHADUR fascinates by his gentle disposition matched by his extraordinary will to work, his Arabian charm and his elegance. BAHADUR is selected for breeding pure bred Shagya Arabs and Partbred Arabs. Produce of of warmblood mares are registered as Partbreds. Best Arabian in Switzerland in the Eventing Category. Nominated as Arabian of the Year by Araber Journal--the first Shagya to have been given this honor. Bahadur is in training with the goals of Gran Prix level dressage and an eventing career with his owner and rider, Sabine Uschmann. He is bold at cross country, willing in dressage, and scopey in stadium jumping. He has the great Shagya personality and beauty with the athleticism of a warmblood. Please contact Sabine Uschmann for more information on breeding to this talented, approved Shagya stallion. Now approved by NASS for breeding in North America!.

    • A Dressage Breeding Clinic with Eberhard Biesenthal - http://americantrakehner.com/In%20Hand/InHand-Art2.htm
      • Abstract:
Document Excerpt: A Dressage Breeding Clinic with Eberhard Biesenthal. Showing the Trakehner In Hand. Preparing& Showing the Young Hunter on the Line. Not only did this give us something to do as we waited, it also provided excellent groundwork and exposure to showing for the young horse and much needed promotion for our fledgling breeding operation. We read the ATA's Stallion Prospect Preparation manual, which does have some good information in it for anyone preparing to show a horse, whether it be a stallion prospect or not. Proper showing in hand, like anything else, takes preparation, but it is worth it in terms of what you will get back in the satisfaction of showing your horse to his best advantage. If you don't show off your horse's conformation, movement or temperament to his best advantage you may not place as high as you possibly could. Following is a synopsis of a clinic given by Eberhard Biesenthal in May near Harvard, IL, on Brad and Mary Jackson's farm. Eberhard volunteered his time for this clinic sponsored by the MidWest Trakehners, and we all wish to thank him for his help. Eberhard Biesenthal was born and raised in Lower Saxony in Germany. He came to the United States in December 1987 to work for Christina Glass in Ohio until she sold her farm and is now the trainer at John and Marilyn Krenger's Sanctuary Farm in Woodstock, IL. Eberhard and his wife Judy own two purebred Trakehner geldings, Artus by Graditz, out of Alma Maid by Mazagran and Avinin by Graditz, out of Astoria III by Halali. Eberhard started off the clinic by emphasizing that you should start early, practicing at home and teaching your horse manners. Start to teach your horse to lead and to walk in a halter, carrying a dressage whip to help with steering and to encourage him to go forward. Eberhard then explained the triangle pattern used for showing your horse in hand( see Figures A, B, and C). The correct stance is with the horse's foreleg on the side nearest the judge to be slightly ahead of the other foreleg and the horse's hindleg nearest the judge to be slightly behind the horse's other hindleg( this is called an open stance). The horse should be standing over the top of his feet and not have his forelegs too far underneath him or his hindlegs trailing out behind him. If you do make small adjustments backward, it is better to push a little on the horse's chest instead of pulling his head backward, as he may object to this by putting his head up in the air or fussing; however, if you have a long backed horse, you might want to back up. After setting your horse up at the point of the triangle, you either walk your horse around the large triangle( Figure A), walk around the shorter triangle( Figure B), or walk away from the judge into the center of the triangle and then straight back( Figure C), depending on the setup of the ring and the preference of the judge. Eberhard advised not to go all out on these sides, because you don't want your horse to make wide movement when starting out or to leave his hind end trailing out behind. Some judges will have all or some of the horses come back in together and walk around( this may happen in large classes, group or championship classes, or at stallion inspections). • Abstract:
Document Excerpt: Home| Clinics| Dressage Clinic| So you Want to Buy a Dressage Horse. Latest Additions. SO YOU WANT TO BUY A DRESSAGE HORSE. It's a decision that often produces the most amazingly bizarre choices. Clemens Dierks is Australia's Olympic Coach, and is the trainer who is credited with single handedly ushering in real FEI level competition in Australia. Either to train a horse up to in the long term to be competitively successful at the highest level, or a horse to enjoy competition immediately. It is better in my opinion to buy a horse with schooling of a very light medium level, that will show up rideability, trainability, movement, submission- all basic requirements- and it will also show up, the ability to do a flying change, and a few half steps( beginnings of piaffe/ passage). " If you have a horse with very good paces, that shows a little bit of half steps, with no resistance- or minimal normal resistance- then any professional can tell that everything is okay. How do I tell the difference between a horse that is genuinely educated and one that has just been tricked up?. You can tell from the basic qualities: submissiveness, if it goes over the back, if it maintains straightness- if that is not there, you know that it has just been tricked up to sell to someone with no knowledge. Trevor Robson practices veterinary medicine in the heart of Australian dressage territory, near Windsor, and he was the dressage team vet at the last World Championships in Rome. A large part of Trevor's practice revolves around the soundness- or otherwise- of dressage horses. There's certainly a big mental element involved that you can't really measure until you start training them. You are looking for evidence of an early arthritic change or a little chip just sitting there, that may be trouble further down the line. If you are buying that sort of horse, you have to be prepared to accept some sort of arthritis, and then you have to make a decision to determine the balance between their schooling and their arthritic changes. Chronic foot concussion effects, like side bone and pedal ostitis usually come from working on hard ground- most people who are serious riders have brilliant arenas these days, which means you can carry and manage feet problems really well. You can even make some assessment of the horse's pain tolerance, to determine whether it is going to react violently to minor little problems, or tolerate them. " It comes down to the level and the amount of work you are doing, but certainly young horses that haven't done much work that show reasonably advanced arthritic changes; horses that are young and haven't done much work, that are not moving evenly; horses that show significant changes on their navicular bones without having done much work- those are all things you would be very cautious about. If the horse's joints feel sensational, the x-rays are good, then if they have been giving the horse Pentosan or something like that, then it has probably only been precautionary, so it's probably not a major question. " Degenerative joint disease involving the foot, like navicular, is certainly a concern. Because dressage horses spend their whole lives going in circles, which in nature they weren't really designed to do, the joints below the fetlock, like the pastern joints and the navicular joints, get a lot of wear, and they are the joints you have to put a lot of pressure on. Caroline Coleby has a formidable reputation as an FEI level dressage competitor, trainer, stud manager, breeder and judge. Certainly it can be more complicated- there are incidents all the time, of breeding stallions that act dangerously in company. Stallions are certainly not suitable for inexperienced riders, but having said that there are always exceptions. " I know people who can mares on their sex, but I've seen a lot of Geldings who are not canned because they were geldings, but they were certainly difficult to deal with. I'd go for smaller rather than gigantic, because they are sounder, easy to travel, easy to stable, everything fits them- you get a really big horse and you need a new float, a new stable, you pay the farrier extra for size 19 shoes. Now she is turning heads with the black imported Swedish stallion, Rasputin and has another Swedish stallion, Magritte ready to start out on the Australian competition scene. Mary Hanna right now has a stable of competition horses, all of which she purchased overseas and she has been shopping in Europe for over a decade now. " The really good horses are very expensive in Europe, ordinary horses are sometimes more expensive here in Australia. " Obviously the younger they are the cheaper they generally are- you should be able to buy a nice weanling for around$ 10, 000, that should get you a real top-of-the-line weanling. Australian born Andrew and his German born wife, Steffi Stevens run a small European style dressage yard- Courtland Horses at Coolana, just outside Brisbane. " You probably get a Warmblood- everyone wants Warmbloods- without the big movement. When you are advising your clients, would you try to steer them in the direction of the younger, scopier horse- or the more schooled model?. We have very little role in deciding what they want- they already know what they want: it's impossible to find, so the whole operation revolves around how far they are prepared to compromise. They are not going to get a 16.3 hand, stunning looking five year old Warmblood that has been started by the best German bereiter, black with four white socks, and floating round for 70% in every class, on their budget of$ 5, 000. It's not always the budgetary constraints, it's often unrealistic expectations of a certain colour, or a certain sex- some would not look at a mare, must be a gelding, must be bay, won't look at any greys, won't look at anything that is under five.

Document Excerpt: The American Holsteiner Horse Association, Inc. Visitors since December 30, 1996. This site is best viewed with Netscape Navigator. The American Holsteiner Horse Association was established in 1977 to promote and support the enjoyment and breeding of the Holsteiner Warmblood horse in North America and is the registry and studbook for Holsteiners in North America. Its primary goal is to develop the Holsteiner into the world's most successful sport horse. The Holsteiner Registry in North America maintains the European studbook model, i.e., that of insuring breeding quality through mare and stallion inspections and strict conformance to its stated breeding policies. The Association is committed to adhering as closely as possible to the selective breeding standards practiced since the 13th century by the Holsteiner horse breeders of Schleswig-Holstein, given obvious geographic and administrative differences. Even as an independent Association, it maintains a strong working relationship with the German Holsteiner Verband. This benefits the breeder through the opportunity to call upon the Verband's vast knowledge of Holsteiner bloodlines while allowing for the uniqueness of the North American situation. At the same time, it stays abreast of current trends and new developments in equine science, business and equestrian disciplines, while remaining sensitive to the needs of the horse community. The Holsteiner initially evolved from native North German stock in the province of Schleswig-Holstein and were in high demand by the military and royalty throughout Europe. About the turn of the century, Thoroughbreds and Anglo-Normans were used to begin shaping the breed into a world-class performance horse. While excelling in the jumping sport, the Holsteiner has also made his mark in Dressage, Eventing and Combined Driving. He is well-balanced, maturing between 16 and 17 hands with round, generous strides and a natural, elastic movement. A lovely head with large, kind eyes is carried on a beautifully arched neck, rising upward out of his withers, producing elegance, lightness and self-carriage. His temperament is relaxed and willing, with good character and an eagerness for work. • Abstract:
Document Excerpt: BHS TAKES ON MAJOR COMPETITION HORSE BREEDING INITIATIVE. BHS TAKES ON MAJOR COMPETITION HORSE BREEDING INITIATIVE. The British Horse Society Board has accepted an invitation from the British Equestrian Federation to enact a major project designed to improve the breeding in this country of competition horses." This is a task which is so badly needed for the betterment of Britain ’ s chances in competition riding at all levels," said BHS Chairman, Michael Clayton." Our leading riders all too often nowadays compete abroad on horses they have had to purchase from other countries, especially our continental rivals. " This benefits overseas breeders whilst our own languish in a British competition horse market where the rewards are often inadequate. Ironically our foreign rivals often use British Thoroughbred lines to improve their stock and then sell the product back to us. Improving horse breeding has always been among the charitable aims of the BHS and we look forward to co-operating fully with the horse sports within the BEF- showjumping, dressage, horse trials, driving, endurance riding and vaulting. Dr Ducker, a distinguished geneticist and formerly a leading official of the Royal Agricultural Society of England, produced a paper earlier this year, commissioned by the BEF, which points out that in Britain" While the breeding of sport horses has yielded a few exceptional animals, there has been no concerted effort to implement centrally organised breeding programmes designed to achieve a progressive improvement in the overall breeding population. " Consequently, Britain ’ s position of historical pre-eminence has been under threat from countries that have invested in their breeding industry in a way that Britain has not. Dr Ducker asserts that" British bred horses do not feature highly in the major international championships. British bred horses are sold for a pittance when compared to their counterparts in Europe. Dr Ducker recommends a plan" to win medals and to improve the market value of British Sport Horses. The BHS is meeting core bodies involved in sport horse breeding in Britain during December and intends to evolve a plan of action as soon as possible to put before the BEF.

    • Horse breeding goals - http://www.equinevetnet.com/vetcare/breeding/genetics/breeding_goals.html
      • Abstract:
Document Excerpt: It is common practice among registries to list the breeder of a horse as the one who owned the mare at the time of service. This practice implies that this individual gave careful thought and planning to the production of the foal; that is, the breeder decided what stallion to breed to the mare; in other words, he had a purpose in mind. Regrettably, this is not usually the case, but the designation" breeder" implies such forethought. John Hislop, a wellknown horseman, once wrote, When those of my generation come to be asked by their grandchildren," Who was the greatest breeder?. The average man can indulge in the enterprise, as Federico Tesio did, only if he takes advantage of the previous progress made by others. The beginner will generally find, after a thorough survey of the situation, that someone else has already been working a lifetime to do what he has in mind. Longterm horse breeding goals can take one of three general directions. Here the breeder attempts to select certain traits that are scattered throughout a large number of animals, and put them together into a final product which breeds true. Breeders involved in this effort have the scientific description of the wild tarpan, which once roamed Europe, as their ideal. The original type is illustrated by cave paintings( Figure 1), and further information about size and weight is obtained from skeletons. The second general direction that horse breeding can take is the preservation of a breed or type as it is, without allowing genetic drift. In this instance a breeder must be aware of the history and development of the type he wishes to preserve. He must be committed to the premise that the type is already perfect as it is. An example of this type of breeding was the undertaking of Wilfred and Ann Blunt in the last century to collect the best examples of the remaining Arabian horses in their homeland, and breed them to perpetuate a type of horse that was rapidly disappearing( Figure 2). Arabian horse historians now recognize these dedicated horse breeders as the ones who saved the Arabian horse from extinction, or at least from drastic change that would have undone what had been accomplished over hundreds of years. The coldblooded horses of Europe were refined with Oriental blood to produce the Lipizzaner and the Holstein, as examples. Also the thoroughbred was developed over several hundred years by the continual improvement of existing stock. Robert Denhardt wrote of Ott Adams, in Quarter Horses, Ott Adams certainly rates as one of the best Quarter Horse breeders who ever lived. During his lifetime, Ott Adams( Figure 3) made much progress toward improvement and development of the quarter horse breed. It does not happen in a year, or even 10 years; and without intelligent, diligent, and even ruthless selection over a period of many, many years, a breeder may finish his lifetime work without an inch of progress. No progress can be made toward an ideal type unless a breeder maintains his predetermined goal without faltering throughout the many years that will be required to bring about significant results. From the very beginning the successful horse breeder must look years ahead and accurately project beyond the shortterm fads, deciding what is really important in the way of horseflesh. Breeders engaged in longterm programs should not adjust their goals to reflect the changing whims of the show ring. Following such a program leads in circles with the breeder never reaching a prescribed goal. To be successful at breeding and showing over the long haul requires considerable foresight. The relatively simple process of breeding a high-priced stallion to highpriced mares and then selling high priced foals does not necessarily constitute a sound breeding program. Eventually it developed the authority to regulate the sport and was limited to a small influential group. Even before the Jockey Club was established, there were attempts to publish records of horses, principally racing records. In 1773, the Jockey Club authorized James Weather by to publish what was thencalled a Calendar. For a decade struggled with thoughts as to how pedigrees should be recorded. Today those involved in horse breeding recognize the importance of pedigrees and accurate breeding records. If nothing else, accurate breeding records allow breeders to choose intelligently the ancestry of their stock. Even Weather by, at that early date, recognized a need to correct the" increasing evil of false and inaccurate pedigrees. It seems that what Weather by had in mind as the condition for eligibility for the Stud Book was direct descent from a small number of original mares, less than a hundred, who were regarded as the foundation stock of the thoroughbred. The pedigrees of these mares could be traced back no further, and had their productive careers mostly in the second half of the Seventeenth Century. The matings of these mares and their offspring and descendants, with the Eastern stallions and their offspring and descendants who were imported during a period of approximately a century following the Stuart Restoration, formed the breed which Weather by accepted as thoroughbred and eligible for his Stud Book. This interpretation is corroborated by a later editor, who stated in the Advertisement to Volume 14" that a recent importation of Arabians from the best Desert strains will, it is hoped, when the increase of size has been gained by training, feeding and acclimatization, give a valuable new line of blood from the original source of the English thoroughbred. It may be noted in passing that this hope was to be disappointed, for events proved that the genetic pool from which successful racehorses could be bred was already filled and, as Admiral Rous pointed out so trenchantly, the Arabians were so inferior as racehorses that they could not be assimilated with the thoroughbreds of the Nineteenth Century. Two centuries of selective breeding in a favorable environment had set an unbridgable gulf between the English racehorse and his desert ancestors. James Weather by( Figure 4) and his descendants had set a basic premise for the future definition of a purebred. " At the Jockey Club meeting in the spring of 1913, Lord Jersey, the Senior Steward of the previous year, put the case for making the regulations even stricter and more precise. His motion was passed by the Club and acted on by Weather by, who inserted the following rule for admission in Volume 22, published the same year:" No horse or mare can, after this date, be considered as eligible for admission unless it can be traced without flaw on both sire's and dam's side of its pedigree to horses and mares themselves already accepted in the earlier volumes of the Book. William Robertson described the situation in The History of Thoroughbred Racing in America, There was the appalling confusion in the matter of names. Every horse of any pretension to quality had a regiment of namesakes tagging along after him-there were" Januses,"" Eclipses,"" Partners,"" Messengers" and" Travelers" in profusion, of both sexes. The same lack of ingenuity was evident in the selection of more pedestrian titles, and historian Hervey counted 102 different females named" Fanny" this or that, and 139" Johns," in the first two volumes of the American Stud Book. The American Jockey Club took over the publication of the American Stud Book in 1896. The concept of" purebred" had developed in the average horseman's mind, and it was generally accepted that a breed had need of a registry. Nearly a dozen breed registries had been initiated in England, including the Clydesdales and the Suffolk. Arab horse breeders had for centuries lived with the concept of purebred horses. " The horses of Arabia are divided into two classes, ignoble and noble; the former they call by a name which signifies without pedigree;' the latter by another name, which means known for two thousand years" When Europeans bought horses from the desert, they demanded more proof than the Arab's word that the horse was what it was represented to be. The Arabs would then produce a document similar to the one shown in Figure 5, the earliest form of a registration certificate. As the Arabian horse became more popular in the United States, the early 20th century breeders began to think in terms of an Arabian registry in this country. They struggled with the questions," What is the role of a registry? Is it to be a club, or society? Should it be a service organization for breeders?". In those days the common man had little interest in such things; consequently the development of a registry or breed society involved a chosen few breeders, and was set up to be rather dictatorial in its policies. It was not until a halfacentury later that registries were conceived as working democracies. In the past few decades, as registries have matured, the autocratic types have become a bit more democratic in their methods, and many democratic registries have grown so cumbersome that individual members have lost much of their voice in control of the organization. Today several registries are large corporate entities involved in not only registering horses, but also controlling and keeping records on the many activities related to the breed and actively publicizing the breed( Figure 6)., organized in 1978, established a definition of purpose which is fairly characteristic of what registries today consider as their role:. To establish, maintain, and operate a nonprofit association, as specified under the laws of the State of New York, of breeders, owners and friends for the promotion and preservation in the Western Hemisphere of the Holstein Horse; to maintain a public registry of Holstein Horses; to mark or brand approved stallions and mares with the association's Branding Seal; to disseminate information to breeders, owners and friends pertaining to the breeding and raising of Holstein Horses; to promote the performance of the Holstein Horse in Dressage, ThreeDay Eventing and Hunting and Jumping, as well as Driving, and generally to do all things appropriate to encourage a public understanding of the Holstein Horse, its breeding and performance. In the past, registries have generally failed to recognize their allimportant influence on the direction of development of the breed. Regrettably, some registries have, for a time, been dominated by a few influential breeders who sought to profit from the way registry policies related to their own breeding program. Fortunately today, because of breed standards set by the registry, the Appaloosa is becoming a type rather than just a color. Today the Appaloosa Registry has tightened limitations of color patterns; for example, they are ruling out roans. Those who are in control of registry policies have an awesome responsibility to decide first whether the overall goal is to preserve the breed as it is, or to improve it. If improvement is the goal, then a breed standard must be carefully defined, with policies set which will move succeeding generations of the breed toward the standard. Regardless of whether the goal is to recreate, preserve, or improve, it is important for a registry to establish policies that will guard against genetic deterioration of the breed. The general overall goal of breeders is to preserve the" asis" situation. But concentrated inbreeding has increased the frequency of genetic defects in the breed. As of this writing the Arabian Registry has not responded to the challenge of establishing policies which will reduce and eventually eliminate this genetic defect in the breed. New registries have the advantage of beginning with more comprehensive purposes and as a result can more effectively direct the breeding toward established goals. Breeding for speed is quite different from breeding for cutting ability. A breeder seeking to develop the ultimate pleasure riding horse will be using a different set of criteria in selection than will a breeder wanting to improve the pulling power in his draft horses. A breeder must always be on guard against defects of soundness which tend to assert themselves in each generation. Mother Nature has been selecting horses on the basis of speed throughout the evolution of the creature. During this evolution, feet changed to enhance speed, size increased to improve speed, brain capacity became larger and thus increased coordination for greater speed, and many other subtle changes occurred which made for a faster horse. Beginning several thousand years ago, man has attempted to bring about more speed in the horse by selective breeding. For the past 300 years breeders have been improving the thoroughbred, but there may be a certain physiological limit to how fast a horse can run. Cunningham in his paper," Genetic Studies in Horse Populations," at the 1975 International Symposium on Genetics and Horse Breeding, proposed that speed improvement in the thoroughbred had reached a plateau since about 1910. Improvement is evident in the first 60 years, and thereafter winning times have remained relatively constant. Others at the symposium suggested that preoccupation with speed, as such, may have outlived its usefulness, and now in order to make progress, breeders must set their sights specifically on complementary factors. With a closed stud book there is no chance of bringing in new traits; thus, developing the ultimate in speed means finding the best combination of all the existing traits that contribute to speed. One horse may be fastest at 6 furlongs, while another is fastest at 10 furlongs. Even with the same age and sex of horses in the same race, a good comparison of ability may not be possible because of the various handicapping weights carried. Some choose to speak in terms of a certain time over a certain distance, neglecting such things as track conditions and competition. Others feel that overall earnings are an accurate measure of speed. Nat Kieffer has described a system called" the performance rate," in his paper" Heritability of Racing Capacity in the Thoroughbred." In summarizing his feelings about goals, Nat Kieffer recommends: a breeding program in which the basic philosophy is breed the" best" to the" best"! This is not to say that conformation of the potential parents should not also be considered, but performance of the parents should be the dominant principle on which breeding programs are based. As an example, Greg Fox, of Sparta, Kentucky, once advertised in The Thoroughbred Record to assist breeders in setting their goals. He proposed a complicated system composed of( 1) conformation factors,( 2) pedigree factors, and( 3) performance factors. A racehorse breeder must never forget the importance of environment in producing a fast horse. Triple Crown was captured by Affirmed over his close rival Alydar( Figure 8) because of superior heart and determination: just how much of that was due to heredity is impossible to determine. Federico Tesio, one of the most successful racehorse breeders in history, and author of Breeding the Racehorse, described his original goal in breeding:" My aim was to breed and raise a racehorse which, over any distance, could carry the heaviest weight in the shortest time. The biggest problem in breeding for endurance is identifying those traits which bring about endurance ability in a horse( Figure 9). One can guess at some primary traits that contribute to good endurance: a high red blood cell count, a high hemoglobin content of the cells, a large lung capacity, largesized air passages, proper endocrine balance, strong musculature, fine bone structure, good temperament, adequate size, proper nervous coordination, good tendon strength, and proper functioning of the heart. Bill Throgmorton, who is well known in competitive trail riding circles, once outlined four general areas of concern when setting goals in breeding endurance horses. Throgmorton also stresses the importance of large air passages when analyzing conformation. He says, The ability of a horse to take in an adequate amount of air can be evaluated by checking the nostrils and throat latch and listening to him breathe after exercise. An interesting genetic question is" Does a good performance record equal good breeding potential" The general feeling among horsemen is yes, if all else is equal. However, sometimes a good breeding prospect cannot compete well himself. In other words, aside from the goal of producing winning endurance horses, such as the great Kamazar, the goal of the breeder should center around the production of good movement, good conformation, and the best temperament. The relative emphasis to give each trait in setting a breeding goal is debatable, but" cow sense" is of extreme value. It will be necessary to rate intelligence subjectively, perhaps by a score of 1 to 10, with the higher figures denoting superiority. Temperament will be important because the horse cooperates closely with man in working livestock. The author of Training and Riding the Cutting Horse, Dean Sage, described goals in breeding cutting horses:. Too short a neck will make for awkward balance, and too upright a one will produce high head carriage.Action is the key to performance in a cutting horse. A horse can be taught what to do, but he must have the physical ability to do it. The points of conformation given above are merely indicative of possession of this ability. They are not absolute criteria, and they will most certainly have exceptions, for if there is one thing certain about horses, it is their uncertainty and the futility of trying to lay down hard and fast rules about them. Cow sense it is often called, which implies that the cutting horse has an intuitive understanding of what cattle are going to do. ( but) the trained cutting horse will demonstrate the same socalled instinct with almost every kind of moving object. It is more reasonable to attribute his propensity to a willingness or inclination to play or move with an animal, once he has been shown what is expected of him. Conformation of the western horse can be generally described as a pleasing appearance. The withers should be prominent, but not so high as to make the purchase of a special saddle necessary. Sometimes the production of traits antagonistic to soundness will be the goal. throwing his forefeet to the outside, swimming exuberantly down the road, wasting his energy. And in this world, dominated by statistics, efficiency, and materialism, it is a joy to see a" Zanero" come dancing down the road, rhythmically tapping out his beat, glowing with good humor, elegantly performing his useless terming. In the same respect, the exaggerated knee action of the Tennessee walking horse can be desirable to the pleasurehorse rider. Jumping competition, 3-day eventing, and over jump races have increased dramatically in worldwide popularity. Many breeders are seriously trying to fill the gap by producing better jumping horses. Legault in his paper," Can We Select Systematically for Jumping Ability?" at the International Symposium on Genetics and Horse Breeding. " Jumping is a complex gesture in which the morphology( development and shape of skeletal muscles), nervous influx, and the degree of training of the animals are involved. Moreover, jumping ability can be characterized by notions such as" strength,"" style," and especially" regularity. " In the breeding of jumpers, conformation, size and substance is a far more important aspect than pedigree. A badly made weed will sometimes win a good race on the flat, but it will never carry 12 stone over fences-or even hurdles-and it is a waste of time and money to try and produce good jumpers from anything except mares and sires of reasonably good bone and build. The wellknown jumping competitor, Seamus Hayes( Figure 11), is quoted as saying:. As always, some breeders look to the show ring to point the direction of their breeding program, but those who can take a lesson from the past realize the folly in this action and concentrate on producing horses with the best pulling power. A British breeder of the 1890s, Archibald M'Meilage, is quoted in The Shire Horse: Aiming at the development of qualities which are enduring rather than temporary, in some localities too much anxiety to produce fancy animals with exaggerated showyard points may have led to the neglect of more solid and enduring excellencies. Back in the days when the tractor was just beginning to overtake the horse in pulling supremacy, lowa A& M College conducted some research and published a pamphlet, Testing Draft Horses. " The ability of horses to pull depends upon their strength, and the available footing. The conformation of the shoulder, the way the collar fits and the character of the work may be the limiting factors in a horse's ability to work. The book, Horse Power, by Frank Lessiter tells an interesting account of Darwin Stark's attempt to breed the world's heaviest horse. Upon locating a large team, Dick and Tom, in the mountains of West Virginia, Darwin gathered together$ 10, 500 in$ 100 bills to persuade the logger to sell the team( Figure 13). After doing some exhibiting of the Belgian team, Darwin eventually sold the smaller horse for$ 10, 000. Robertson, William: The History of Thoroughbred Racing in America. • A brief history of horse breeding in Latvia - http://www.ljf.var.lv/english/history.html
      • Abstract:
Document Excerpt: A brief history of horse breeding in Latvia. A brief history of horse breeding in Latvia. The forerunners of Latvian horses are supposed to have been the now extinct tarpans that roamed their way from Russia's steppes into the forests off the coastline of the Baltic Sea. They adapted themselves to the humid clime in the Northern forest belt and the moist soils, and through interbreeding with the strains and breeds in Northern Europe and in the East, a spontaneous improvement process occured. As early as 1042 chronicler Adam of Bremen wrote that" in Kurland and Semgallen the horses are very good". In 1865 historian Fraas, describes horse breeding around the year 1600 and, referring to the horses of Lower Saxony, Friesland and Westphalia as the best ones, also makes mention of the" Lieflanders"( i.e. The first half of the 18th century sees the Livonian Order of the invaders using the indigenous studs for developing and raising war-horses. In the later half of the 19th century the landed gentry in the Baltic begin to actively take interest in raising thoroughbreds and putting them to good use in sports. 126 of them were to sire the later to be Latvian strain of pedigree horses, among them thoroughbreds and coss-breeds of Arabian descent, thoroughbreds and cross-breeds of riding horses, Anglo-Norman and Trachian horses, trotters of Orlov of Russia, the Oldenburg horses, the indigenous ones, later on the Hanoverians. 425 studs and 5 stallions of the Oldenburg breed brought from Holland to Latvia in 1920 contribute to the making of the Latvian harness horses. In 1921 a stud farm was started at Okte, where a bunch of 17 stallions imported from Holland established the main strains of the Latvian harness-horse breed to be. Under the editorship of M.Laze 4 chapters of the pedigree book of Latvia's horses see the light. The 19th century witnessed the inflow from Russia into Latvia of brood stallions of the trotter background. Riders from Latvia participate in races in Poland, Germany, France and elsewhere, winning victories and awards. During World War II Latvia sustained a loss of 46000 horses, valuable stallions and brood mares among them. The champion Finals- horse breeds stallion of Latvia. Pavlovièð and other enthusiasts set about resuming the efforts at developing horse breeds in Latvia and a Horse-breeding. Board is established under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture in Latvia. It was started on 95120 pedigree horses( 60% Latvia's warm-blooded harness and light horses and on representatives of riding( saddle) thoroughbreds, Trakehner and Arab breeds, used for improving the strain. From the 12000 assessed and approved horses in Vidzeme in the years 1948 and 1949 71% were constituted by Latvian harness-horses, 25% racing( sports) horses and 4% of pure-bred individuals. In the draught horse category those were the ones belonging to the leading strains of the Oldenburg breed Inweel, Eranus, Siego, Egero, Democrat, Ammon, Markgrafs, Gotenfuerst, Kru-Kru, Verdi, Banko, Finaldus and Spekonis. The racing( sports) horse breed derives its strains from Altmeister, Alvin, Bajars the thoroughbred saddle horse Darling by name. In 1957 on the Moscow race course Latvian riders carry off a convincing victory. The records set by Alkazars and Stiprais in maximum load draught become Russia's absolute record-holders. The prevailing line in the harness-horse class was that of Spekonis/ Imperators/ Lsb 100/ stallion born in Groningen in 1935. The agriculture- mechanization process causes the importance of the horse as a tractive force to diminish and beginning with 1960 the horses of the Latvian breed begin to swiftly oust the draught-horses, but in Latgale- the trotters. In the 1970s the Latvia's breed horses account for 84% of the horse population in Latvia, the rest are racing( sports) horses. By 1980, horses of Latvia's strain for breeding, for sports are mainly to be found on three stud-farms: collective farm" Tçrvete", state-farm" Burtnieki" and state-farm" Sovetskaya Latvia", as well as on 52 minor stud farms. In 1982 the pedigree mare Vendeta was sold off to Holland and fetched 67 000 USD. Horses of Latvia's breed are willingly bought abroad, where their showing in hurdle-races and in dressage is of the highest kind. In 1976 the riders found a domicile at 75 Kleistu Street where there are accommodated also departments of pentathlon, of fencing, of sailing and of equestrian sport, numbering altogether 200 groups. The School is daily attended by children who are eneolled and engaged in study and training groups, adults wishing recreation and to learn riding in paying groups. Engaged in the departmant of equestrian sport are dressage groups and groups of concours hippique whose members take part in international competitions of a world scale.
