    • Arabian horse shows - http://www.arabianhorseamerica.com/activities/shows.html
      • Abstract:
Document Excerpt: Breeding/ Halter Classes. Performance Classes. Western Classes. In order to compete at the highest levels, both professional and serious amateur riders spend a lot of time on the road traveling from show to show working their way through competitive events at the major regional and national shows. The participants include a ringmaster who coordinates the classes and keeps everything moving along. Most officials are licensed by the American Horse Shows Association, the governing body for most American horse shows. There are local Arabian-only shows where participants qualifying for the" regional" and" national" levels. At" open shows," Arabians compete along side other breeds in a wide variety of classes. The rules are written and amended by the action of the International Arabian Horse Association's annual convention and submitted to the AHSA. All Arabian horses participating in the Arabian division of AHSA-approved shows must be registered with the Arabian Horse Registry of America, The Canadian Arabian Horse Registry or, if under a year old, must be eligible for registration and registration applied for. The International Arabian Horse Association( IAHA) approves more than 400 Arabian shows each year around the country. For those who want to compete at the highest levels, IAHA offers 18 regional and several national events, including the U.S. Other national events conducted by IAHA include the Canadian National Championship, Youth Nationals, and the Youth Judging Contest. Handlers may also use enticements such as carrots or grass to maintain the horse's attention. In colt-stallion and filly-mare classes, the horses are judged on the following criteria, presented here in order of importance:. Suitability as a breeding animal, for example, a stallion 2 years and older must have both testicles descended. These classes are judged on reproductive likeness, uniformity, quality of breed characteristics, conformation and similarity. Most Classic Arabian- open to mares, stallions and geldings over two years of age. Arabian horses are shown in virtually every capacity imaginable with the exception of gaited classes. Show ring opportunities under English tack include: Park, Pleasure, Country Pleasure, Hunter Pleasure, Show Hack, Hunter, Jumper, Dressage and Roadster Under Saddle. The Arabian Western horse can be shown in Western Pleasure, Reining, Working Cow, Cutting, Trail and Western Riding. The junior exhibitor is offered Equitation classes in Saddle Seat, Hunt Seat and Stock Seat as well as Showmanship and Western Riding. English Pleasure horses give a distinct appearance of being a pleasure to ride and display a pleasurable attitude. English Pleasure horses are judged on manners, performance attitude quality and conformation. Country English Pleasure are meant to give the appearance of being a pleasure to ride and display a pleasurable attitude. Country English Pleasure horses are judged on attitude, manners, performance, quality and conformation. Hunter Pleasure horses, as with other pleasure classes, give the appearance of being a pleasure to ride while displaying a pleasant, relaxed attitude. Hunter Pleasure horses are judged on manners, performance, suitability as a hunter, quality and conformation. Park horses are judged on brilliant performance, presence, quality, manners and conformation. English Show Hack horses are not necessarily dressage horses nor are they English Pleasure horses. A Show hack must be a well-trained animal showing balance, vitality, animation, presence and quality. Arabian Western Pleasure horses are shown in a stock type saddle and a standard western type headstall with any standard western bit. Riders wear western hats, long sleeved shirts with collars and scarves or ties. The horse may wear boots or bandages only in Reining, working cow and cutting classes. Junior horse classes are judged on substance, quality, performance and manners. Amateur and Junior exhibitor classes are judged on manners, performance, suitability of the horse to the rider, substance, quality and conformation. Arabian Reining horses perform a prescribed pattern which includes circles, spins, lead changes, roll backs, runs, stops and backs. Rollbacks are 180 degree turns completed by running to a stop, rolling the shoulders back to the opposite direction over the hocks and departing at the lope as one continuous motion. Circles are maneuvers at the lope to demonstrate control with little or no resistance. Backing requires the horse to move in reverse in a straight line for a required distance. Arabian Working Cow classes are designed to demonstrate the horse's ability to hold, contain and work a cow. Penalties will be counted for loosing a working advantage with the cow, passing the cow, loosing control of the cow, biting or striking the cow, and knocking the cow down. Hunter Seat Classes-These classes test the rider's ability to gracefully manage the obstacles faced in the hunting field. Both conformation and performance are important with different classes emphasizing one or the other. Amateur, Junior Rider and Green Working hunters will be asked to jump courses that are between 2'9" and 3 in height with spreads no greater than 3. Warm-up hunter classes consist of no less than 6 fences at heights between 2 and 2'6". Horses should be obedient, alert, responsive and demonstrate free movement. A horse must be entered in at least one hunter class over obstacles to be eligible to enter and show in the Hunter Under Saddle class when it is counted toward a Championship. Arabian Hunters are shown in light, hunter type bridles with cavesson nosebands. Martingales are not allowed in Hunter Hack, Under Saddle or tie breaking classes. Arabian Hunter championships are offered at shows where a minimum of three classes are held, one of which must an Under Saddle class and the other two over fences. Equitation Classes-The rider is judged on the ability to maintain form and control on the flat and while jumping over fences. Appointment Classes-This class emphasizes the fox hunting clothing and tack. Check out The Hunter Jumper Network and the Show Jumping Magazine on line from the same web site. Natural abilities and precise training prepare horse and rider for entry in the many different types of jumping competitions. The Riders Position-In order to stay over a horse's center of gravity and to allow its head and neck to extend, the rider leans forward during a jump. Higher fences require horse and rider to find the correct take-off point. Arabian jumpers are shown over courses of fences and are scored according to the American Horse Shows Association rules. Obstacles in Amateur and Junior to Ride classes will start at 3, with a maximum height of 3'3". Dressage events are managed primarily by the US Dressage Federation: Contact the USDF( United States Dressage Federation). Arabian owners also compete in Dressage at the US National Arabian Championship( see IAHA) at various levels of competition. " Dressage develops the horse's physique and suppleness and improves the horse's three natural gaits, making it a pleasure to ride. Dressage is considered classical training because it uses gymnastic exercises-a series of movements and figures-which have been studied and developed for centuries. When done systematically and correctly, the exercises will cause the horse to be supple on both sides and to respond willingly and obediently, moving freely forward with pure gaits and an even tempo. Sometimes Dressage is called basic training for horses because it incorporates a variety of exercises that develop both the horse's athletic ability and obedience. No matter if it's Western or English, most disciplines from racing, to reining, to jumping all benefit from Dressage training. Examples of basic-level exercises include figures such as serpentines and circles, movements such as lateral movements( sideways), and transitions such as trot to halt, or walk to canter. Whereas more aggressive sports tend to be intuitive and instinctive to the horse and rider, Dressage perfects the rider's analytical skills and creates a more artistic fluid motion for the horse. It's not a sport where you can buy a winning super star horse and expect to win, you have to develop the skills yourself and that is the appeal to those with improved horsemanship in mind. - This year, the US National Arabian and Half-Arabian Championship Horse Show will offer competitive dressage classes. Recognized dressage competitions use tests issued by the American Horse Shows Association. These tests are designed to confirm the horse's ability to perform at a specific level according to the objectives and standards of the AHSA. As a result, the advanced horse becomes an athlete, developing strength, flexibility, and the ability to perform collected and extended gaits with lightness and brilliance. Arabian Formal Driving horses are shown in a light show harness with blinkers, overcheck or side check. The animated natural trot is extremely bold and brilliant and executed with apparent ease. Arabian Pleasure Driving horses are shown in light show harness with blinkers, overcheck or side check. Either a two or four-wheeled vehicle may be used, but the use of a two wheeled cart is encouraged. Junior horses are judged on quality first, then manners and performance, while Amateur and Junior to Drive classes emphasize manners followed by performance and quality. Arabian Country Pleasure Driving horses are shown in light harness appropriate to the vehicle and a bridle with blinkers, overcheck or side check. Amateur and Junior to drive classes are judged on attitude, manners, performance, quality, conformation and the suitability of the horse to the driver. Formal, Informal and Country Combination classes are both harness and undersaddle classes. The horses are exhibited first in harness as Formal Driving, Pleasure Driving or Country Driving horses, working both ways of the ring at the required gaits. Horses are then saddled and shown as Park, English or Country Pleasure horses at the gaits required, both ways of the ring. The bridle must have blinkers of the square pattern and an overcheck with a separate overcheck bit. Flowing capes, coats, pantaloons, head dresses, scarfs, sashes and any other decorations in keeping with a colorful desert regalia are allowed, with safety remaining of utmost importance. Ladies Side Saddle horses are show in either English or Western tack and attire. This class is judged 85% on manners, performance, suitability as a sidesaddle mount, quality and conformation. classifieds| infocenter| history& heritage| activities| event calendars. Document Excerpt: Kathy Johnson Dressage- Copyright 1999- All rights reserved. Buying a Dressage Horse. by Kathryn King Johnson, M.Ed. A long sloping shoulder gives the horse more reach, with more room to perform extensions. The hindquarters in the dressage horse will actually rock the weight off his front feet, so mild front leg problems are not quite as important as they would be in a jumper, but conformation problems in the hind legs can be more important. The horse should pick up both leads fluidly without crossfiring, even without much training. &# 9; The breed of the dressage prospect is not as important as his type: hot blood, warmblood or coldblood. All types are suitable for dressage, but should most importantly suit your personality.

    • SHC part1 - http://www.warmbloods.net/ute/SHCpart1.htm
      • Abstract:
Document Excerpt: Sport Horse Conformation And The Breeder. When a sport horse breeder first looks at a horse he will be impressed by those qualities which he is trying to produce in his own breeding program. He will evaluate a stallion or mare s potential for passing on certain characteristics; and every horse, including geldings, may provide information on the heritable qualities of the parents. It must demonstrate in temperament, conformation and movement its suitability for a specific discipline. Although directed primarily at the breeder, this article applies equally to the rider, whether the objective is upper level competition or simply non-competitive pleasure riding. The value of the qualities mentioned above- athleticism, a good temperament, and acceptable conformation- may vary slightly with our goals. For the same buyer, a horse that shows natural athletic ability, a good temperament and acceptable conformation, will be judged much more favorably. A horse being judged primarily for athleticism is best seen in conditions creating the most positive first impression. Thus, if seen moving at liberty, and in a quiet, excitement-free and relatively small enclosure, then balance, rhythm and natural self-carriage may be readily observed. Is it for jumping, dressage, eventing, driving, endurance or any other discipline? Although there are some variations of conformation which are discipline-specific, most of the desirable qualities are common to all sport horses. Bio-mechanical efficiency permits ease of movement, which, in turn, reduces trauma and encourages soundness. For present purposes we will confine the discussion to horses being selected for the three Olympic disciplines of Show Jumping, Dressage and Three Day Event. However, there is reliable evidence that 25% of all foals do not live up to the qualities of their sire and dam, and another 25% make only serviceable riding or pleasure horses. The best chance of obtaining genetic excellence in a sport horse occurs when it has well-conformed parents that themselves have good performance results. Occasionally we will see an outstanding performer whose parents and close relatives have not performed, or at any rate have not done so with distinction. That individual may represent a rare and valuable new line, but it is advisable to treat so-called' new lines with caution when making a breeding decision. Phenotype is the term used to describe the outward, visible structure of the horse, sometimes referred to as surface anatomy. But it also encompasses the internal anatomy of the animal, and includes the physiological function of the heart, lungs, digestion, central nervous system, and so on. It should be accepted for our purposes that athletic ability in the horse is determined by the phenotype and is detectable by examination. Breeders can increase the likelihood of success significantly by:. studying the conformation of sire and dam and analyzing it correctly;. mating and culling to correct or eliminate conformational weaknesses;. By emphasizing the qualities that allow for greater athletic potential, we minimize the likeliness of unsoundness and breakdown. If buyers know what is the best conformation for their particular discipline, the breeder may have to anticipate that and produce, for example, horses more suited to dressage than to hunter or jumper, and that anticipation may be narrowed further, depending on the level of accomplishment which the riders hope to reach. These two disciplines may sometimes accept variations in conformation, but certain basic requirements are almost always the same. For a breeder purchasing breeding stock, or trying to decide which stallion to breed to which mare, or a rider or competitor selecting a horse for competition, a certain amount of judgment is required. When trying to forecast how an unproven horse will perform, or even how he will look when fully developed, there are three criteria we should consider:. Performance results of parents, siblings and ancestors. If we see two horses side by side, one really good looking and correctly conformed, but on which we have absolutely no information, and the other poorly conformed but with good information on his pedigree and ancestors performance records, we will almost always be safer to choose the well-conformed for breeding purposes. Members of a specific breed association are sometimes overwhelmed- occasionally' blinded- by the bloodlines of the horse in front of them, and may forgive an otherwise unforgivable defect. They may even get defensive by recalling the outstanding performance record of a close or even distant relative, in spite of a significant conformational flaw. Mating to correct weaknesses of conformation merits special mention. However, we know that over 90% of all mammalian traits are controlled by multiple genes, while simple Mendelian genetics apply to less than 10%. These include the length of the vertebral bones themselves and the width and compressibility of the inter-vertebral discs. Each of these factors, in turn, is controlled by several genes, producing the possibility of a large variation in back length. Conformation judging is a process of observation which can determine whether a horse will move well, carry weight and stay sound. The equine and human, both being mammals, have many skeletal similarities, and it may be useful if the human skeleton is visualized when considering the layout of the bones of the horse. To learn about the bones and their angles, we must be familiar with the' points of the horse, and following are some desirable bone relationships and proportions( Figure 1). We are looking for sound, fertile, long-lived and athletic horses, and should treat' fashion with caution.

The best general impression of the balanced conformation of a horse is usually created when it is viewed for the first time from a distance, preferably of fifty feet or more. From there it can be seen if the horse is' well put together and made up of three well-connected or three' separate parts. this allows for a positive first impression of the horse s basic movements and natural athleticism. The horse must always be looked at as a single unit, but, for the purposes of discussion, he may be' divided into the following four sections:. If the neck is too long the laryngeal nerve may be stretched and injured, sometimes resulting in' roaring. Expert opinion varies on the inheritability of roaring, but it frequently occurs in long-necked horses, and it may be that the neck length is the significant factor. However, some horses have difficulty flexing at the poll because the neck muscles are tight, not because the throat latch is heavy. Depending on the length of the neck, there is evidence that a heavier head may be mechanically more balancing than a smaller, lighter one. A neck which is too long is predisposed to dislocations of the vertebrae and damage to cervical nerves, which may result in faulty coordination or ataxia( wabbles). And, as mentioned earlier, it may also produce vocal chord paralysis( roaring). Slight asymmetry is acceptable, as long as the tail is carried in the mid-line. In a riding horse, it may also result from' overwork, particularly when the horse is asked to make repeated circles on one hand, resulting in spasm of the paravertebral muscles on that side. Flexion of the lumbo-sacral joint( L-S) permits the loins to coil by using the so-called' ring of muscles which stretches from the poll to the hocks. The' sitting down action of the horse- as seen in a jumper at take-off, a dressage horse in the piaffe, a quarter-horse sliding to a stop, or racehorse in the starting gate- requires flexion of the lumbo-sacral joint at the' loin coupling. Flexion in the lumbo-sacral joint is the main cause of bascule, and the longer the pelvic bone, the more leverage can be developed. When the lumbo-sacral joint is forward and the croup is lengthened, the lumbar span is shortened and the stress to which it is subjected is minimized. Combined with a long pelvic bone, whose angle with the horizontal is greater than 15°, a long croup facilitates more efficient bio-mechanical leverage and flexion. The pelvis anchors and supports the horse s muscles of impulsion, and the larger the pelvis the greater the potential power. The farther forward it lies on the pelvic line, and the nearer to the midpoint of the bone, the longer will be the ischium( the' seat bone), giving greater leverage. Loin coiling is mechanically more efficient if the distance from the L-S joint to the hip socket is short. However, a long back and a long rib cage can give a smooth ride with good turns and lateral movements, but such a horse will usually have difficulty with collection. Lightness comes from a combination of engagement of the hindquarters and arching, rounding or basculing of the back. It has a back of medium length, in which the thoracic vertebrae( which carry the ribs and are both longitudinally and laterally flexible) account for most of its length. On the other hand, a long backed horse has difficulty with the bascule, but may find lateral bending easier to perform. It is, however, unlikely that such movements will be carried out correctly, with efficiency, showing a good bascule. As the structure becomes more balanced the loin, stifles, and hocks will show an increased range of movement, and the hindquarter will be able to engage more effectively. Horses under saddle frequently develop thickening of the spines of T18 and L1, the two vertebrae which comprise the thoraco-lumbar joint( Figure 2). A long loin, a weak coupling, and a' table-top croup, if accompanied by upward tipping of the rear of the pelvis, produces serious mechanical disadvantage. The' ring of muscles( sometimes referred to as the' circle of muscles) is a ligamentous and muscular system which stretches from the poll to the hocks, with a forward extension under the abdomen. It was first described by Gustav Steinbrecht in 1889; later by Waldemar Seunig( 1941), Gustav Rau( 1948), and Jean Froissard( 1967), and referred to in detail by Dr. The ring of muscles and ligaments is essential for normal locomotion in the horse, and the lumbo-sacral joint is the center point of this system. A horse is said to be' close coupled( sometimes described as having a' good connection) when there is a short and firm connection between the withers and the croup, primarily the result of a short loin. The main leverage point in the forequarter is the withers; the main leverage point in the hindquarter is the lumbo-sacral joint. A well-attached neck and tall withers give great leverage, so that lowering the head and arching the neck elevates the back with ease. The major muscles in the system- the iliopsoas in the pelvis, and the external and internal oblique and the rectus abdominis muscles of the abdomen- complete the ring. Contraction of the muscles of the neck( scaleni), the rump( iliopsoas) and the abdomen,' pull on the spine from the poll to the croup. A strain on the L-S joint stretches the lumbo-dorsal fascia, creating an undulating, broken top line, resulting in difficulty in coiling the loins. The hunter bump( the stretching and partial separation of the sacro-iliac ligaments) is usually worse on one side, and is best seen from behind. Less than 10° should be rejected for breeding, as loin coiling is made much more difficult the more horizontal the slope. Impulsion is the action of driving the basculed body forward with the propulsive muscles of the hindquarters, not the hocks. A horse without a bascule is a horse without impulsion. A horse without impulsion is grossly inefficient, and is prone to injury and premature unsoundness. Anatomical references( Figures 2, 4a and 4b): withers; scapula; point of shoulder; arm; point of elbow. While this angle is important, of even greater significance is the angle created by the shoulder relative to the arm( the humerus). The two most important proportions in relation to the shoulder are the angle created by the scapula and arm, and the length of the arm relative to the scapula. This permits a forward-reaching action desirable in dressage( Figure 4a). They bear 65% of the weight of the standing horse, and are, therefore, particularly vulnerable to the stresses and strains of jumping and galloping. Ideally the forearm( radius and ulna) is long, strong and vertical; the knee joint( carpal bones) is large, flat in front and tilted forward minimally; and the cannon bone( metacarpal) is short and vertical. It can cause contraction of various groups of tendons and may result in permanent misalignment such as offset( bench) knees, calf knees, tied-in knees, internal rotation of the cannon bones and fetlock joints and upright pasterns. It should be first observed at rest, and any significant increase in the degree of flexion noted when in motion is a good indication whether the horse is on the forehand. Front leg excellence is essential in jumpers and event horses, but less important in dressage horses which work almost exclusively from their hindquarters and hocks. In the forelimb, minor degrees of external rotation and lateral deviation- the latter may originate below the knee or at the pastern- may be acceptable, even in breeding stock. By way of a simple test, using a firm and level surface, if the horse trots without evidence of' paddling or' winging, slight variations of these conditions may be acceptable. Further, when external rotation is seen from in front, and before making an adverse judgement, the knee should also be examined carefully from the side. From this perspective the rotation is often seen to be minimal, and likely to be of little mechanical significance. Anatomical references: point of hip; point of buttock; last rib; stifle joint( lateral condyle of femur); hip socket; pelvic length- pt of hip to pt. It is of paramount importance for all, but especially for dressage riders, to know that collection starts with flexion of the L-S joint, the point where the loins meet the croup. To enable the horse to coil for collection and jumping, and of special importance for dressage and jumper horses, the pelvic length should be 1/ 3 or more of the body length, with a slope of 18-22°. The muscles of the quarters- the gluteus medius, femoral biceps, semi-tendinosis and semi-membranosis- must be large, evenly and well developed. open angled, post-legged( over-straight; usually coon-footed). Open hind leg joints at the hock( as seen from the side, are mechanically very efficient. The walk is usually reduced in scope, but it may be acceptable or even good if the loin flexes efficiently. These horses make good race horses, steeplechasers and jumpers. These horses often show an impressive walk due to a significant overstride, but at the trot, seen from behind, the horse in often bow-legged, and the hocks move in a' wobbly fashion, rotating to the outside before straightening when the weight is transferred to the other foot.

Animal Excerpts/ Projects. " An Arabian will take care of its owner as no other horse will, for it has not only been raised to physical perfection, but has been instilled with a spirit of loyalty unparalleled by that of any other breed. Welcome to the world of the Arabian! The information on this page was graciously provided by the Arabian Horse America's- Arabian Resource Center and The Arabian Horse Registry of America. For all the latest Arabian news, registry information, programs, and much more, be sure to visit the The Arabian Horse Registry of America and Arabian Horse America's- Arabian Resource Center. General Questions: The Arabian Horse Registry of America. Considered the best breed for distances, the Arabian's superior endurance and stamina enable him to consistently win competitive trail and endurance rides. In the sweet grass oasis along the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers in the countries that are now known as Syria, Iraq, and Iran, and in other parts of the Arabia penninsula, this hearty horse developed and would soon be known as the Arabian horse. Long before Europeans were to become aware of his existence, the horse of the desert had established himself as a necessity for survival of the Bedouin people. The mythology and romance of the breed grew with each passing century as stories of courage, endurance and wealth intermingled with the genealogies. The very nature of the breed, it's shape as well as it's color, was influenced by religious belief, superstition and tradition. Therefore the greater the" Jibbah" the greater the blessings carried by the horse. Due in part to the religious significance attached to the Arabian horse, as well as the contribution it made to the wealth and security of the tribe, the breed flourished in near isolation. Any mixture of foreign blood from the mountains or the cities surrounding the desert was strictly forbidden. While other, desert type breeds developed in North Africa and the periphery of the Great Desert, these" Barbs" and" Turks" were definitely not of the same blood as Arabians and were disdained by the proud Bedouin. If a desert traveler touched their tent pole, they were obligated to provide for this" guest", his entourage and animals for up to three days without request for payment. Through the centuries the tribes who roamed the northern desert in what is now Syria became the most esteemed breeders of fine horses. The value placed upon the mare led inevitably to the tracing of any family of the Arabian horse through his dam. The five basic families of the breed, known as" Al Khamsa", include Kehilan, Seglawi, Abeyan, Hamdani and Hadban. A great story of courage, endurance, or speed always accompanied the recitation of the genealogy of the sub-strain, such as the great Kehilet al Krush, the Kehilet Jellabiyat and the Seglawi of Ibn Jedran. Each of these mares carried with them stories of great battles and intrigue. Daughters and granddaughters of these fabled mares changed hands through theft, bribery and deceit. Though few Arabian horses accompanied the Turks and Vandals on their forays into Europe, their hardy Barb and Turkish mountain horses were no less impressive to their victims. The Bedouins have generally been credited with the beginning of selective pure breeding of Arabian horses. These tribes, although their breeding records were kept by memory and passed down through the ages verbally, are also credited as the first to keep breeding records and maintaining the purity of the Arabian breed. To this date, many Arabian pedigrees can be traced to" desert breeding" meaning there is no written record but because of the importance of purity to the Bedouins, we accept desert bred as an authentic verification of pure blood. Greed, ambition, desire for prestige, as well as an honest interest in saving the breed from extinction was the driving force behind Governments, Royal families and adventuring private citizens alike in the acquisition and propagation of this great prize of the Bedouin people-the Arabian horse. Nathan Harrison of Virginia imported the first Arabian stallion in 1725. However, his breeding program was ruptured by the Civil War and nothing survived. There, he was presented with two stallions from the Sultan's stable, Leopard and Lindentree. The Chicago Worlds Fair held in 1893 drew widespread public attention and had an important influence upon the Arabian horse in America. While every country in the world was invited to participate, Turkey chose to exhibit 45 Arabian horses in a" wild eastern" exhibition. 2 in the Arabian Stud Book of America( later changed to the Arabian Horse Registry of America). Many breeding farms today contain animals tracing to these horses as taproot foundation stock. Historical importations from England and Egypt were made soon after the Fair by such breeders as Spencer Borden, who imported 20 horses between 1898 and 1911 to his Interlachen Stud, and W.R. One of the most significant importations occurred in 1906, when Homer Davenport received permission from the Sultan of Turkey to export Arabian horses. Davenport, with the backing of then President Theodore Roosevelt, imported 27 horses which became the foundation of" Davenport Arabians." The Davenport importation of Arabian horses direct from the desert excited the few Arabian breeders in this country. This group of breeders decided that the time was right to form a registry to promote the horse and encourage the importation of new blood. Department of Agriculture established the Registry as a national registry and the only one for the purebred Arabian breed. Joseph Draper brought Spanish Arabians into the American picture when he imported five horses from Spain in 1934. Dickinson's Traveler's Rest Arabian Stud was established between 1934-1937 on an imported mare from Egypt and one from Brazil as well as seven mares from Poland. In the 1940's and 1950's importations of Arabians to America slowed down as American breeding programs evolved from the previously imported stock. With the death of Lady Wentworth in 1957 and the dispersal of Crabbet Stud, importations in abundance were again made from England, and the post-war stud farms of Germany, Poland, Russia, Spain and Egypt were" rediscovered." Significant importations followed from these countries by several groups of dedicated breeders and again a new era of Arabian horse breeding dawned. Historically the Arabian has maintained a reputation as the horse of beauty, intelligence, courage, endurance, and romance. Because he was bred and reared in close contact with man from the earliest records, and existing in mutual inter-dependence, he developed an unequaled ability to bond with humans. Indeed, his intelligence has been celebrated in thousands of anecdotes. The Arabian gentleness and tractability, while originally the effect of education, is now inherited, and is observed in foals bred in a foreign environment. These stellar qualities of the Arabian horse were also the natural result of a good original stock, which by intensive breeding in a favorable environment had maintained its purity. His blood is commanding to a remarkable degree, and invariably dominates all the breeds to which it is introduced and contributes its own superior qualities to them. When imported to England, the Arabian became the progenitor of the Thoroughbred. In Russia, the blood of the Arabian horse contributed largely to the development of the Orloff Trotter. And in America, again it was the Arabian horse which became the progenitor of the Morgan and through the English Thoroughbred, to make the Trotter. The Arabian breed is different in that it does not exist as a result of selective breeding, as were other modern light breeds, where it was necessary to establish a registry prior to the development of the breed, but was a breed that had been recognized for thousands of years and had been maintained and cherished in its purity over those years as much as is humanly possible. The high intelligence, trainability, gentle disposition and stamina of the Arabian enable it to excel at a wide variety of activities popular today. Show classes in English and western pleasure, cutting and reining, even jumping and dressage provide opportunities for fun and enjoyment at both all-Arabian events and open breed shows alike. In addition, the Arabians Bedouin heritage is evident in their unequaled ability to bond with humans, making them the perfect horse for family members of all ages. With today's prices comparable with other popular breeds, excellent Arabian horses are now accessible to a broad base of horse enthusiasts. Records reflecting desert-bred animals still connect today's Arabian horse's traits with particular traits prized many hundreds of. Such documentation makes it possible to retrospectively study heredity, to then predict what good and bad characteristics will be likely to pass from a given stallion and mare into the next generation. The Arabian Horse Registry of America participates in this ongoing body of essential knowledge by verifying breed purity through blood typing and pedigree for every foal registered from pure-bred Arabian mating. The Registry makes this information available as a service-an invaluable tool for the serious horseperson in breeding selection. The Bedouins of the Arabian desert were dependent for survival on their Arabian horses. The Arabian's distinctly eloquent head has been represented artistically for literally thousands of years, to th.is day appearing in nearly all horse related advertisements for every conceivable equine related commodity.bian head remains its most distinctive and sought after quality. In general, Arabians have a short, straight back( usually 23 vertebra as compared to 24 with most other equine breeds), perfect balance and symmetry, a deep chest, well-sprung ribs, deep girth and strong legs of thick density. An Arabian can most readily be identified by its finely chiseled head with a dished face, long arching neck, and high tail carriage. Although no individual animal will possess all of the qualities described below, the composite, nevertheless, epitomizes the finest specimens observed:. His skeleton is characterized by a relative shortness of skull, a slenderness of the lower jaw, a larger size of brain case. The overall appearance of the Arabian head is frequently enhanced by a slight protrusion over the forehead and extending to just below the eyes, called the" Jibbah" by the Arabs, and greatly prized. The cheek bones spread wide apart at the throat, often between five or six inches, enabling the muzzle to be drawn in without compressing the windpipe, and permitting the animal to breathe easily when running. The ears, smaller in stallions and of good size in mares, are pointed, set evenly together in an upright position, and of great flexibility. Generally speaking, the head should be lean, somewhat well chiseled, and showing energy, intelligence, courage, and nobility. In colt-stallion and filly-mare classes, the horses are judged on the following criteria, presented here in order of importance:. Suitability as a breeding animal, for example, a stallion 2 years and older must have both testicles descended. Arabian owners also compete in Dressage at the US National Arabian Championship at various levels of competition. Arabian Dressage- This year, the US National Arabian and Half-Arabian Championship Horse Show will offer competitive dressage classes. The bridle must have blinkers of the square pattern and an overcheck with a separate overcheck bit.The bridle may consist of bit, hackamore or any suitable headstall. Flowing capes, coats, pantaloons, head dresses, scarfs, sashes and any other decorations in keeping with a colorful desert regalia are allowed, with safety remaining of utmost importance. All divisions of this class are judged 75% performance and manners and 25% on appointments. Ladies Side Saddle horses are shown in either English or Western tack and attire. This class is judged 85% on manners, performance, suitability as a sidesaddle mount, quality and conformation. _ Thank you to My-Bon Arabians, Moon Dust Arabians, Triple Creek Arabian Farm, West Slope Arabians, Brumarba Arabian Stud and Genesis Equestrian Center for the wonderful photos.

    • 1998 Pavo Cup Finals - Dutch Young Dressage Horse Championships - http://www.junior-riders.com/news/holland/1998/pavo.html
      • Abstract:
Document Excerpt: 1998 Pavo Cup Finals- Dutch Young Dressage Horse Championships. 1998 Pavo Cup Finals- Dutch Young Dressage Horse Championships. Only four years ago, horse feed company Pavo decided to sponsor a special circuit for four and five year old dressage horses. This initiative, which was applauded by the KWPN studbook, became one of the most popular classes at the national show circuit. By making special division for youngsters, these future dressage champions were more judged on their potential and movement instead of their conformation and ability to run a correct test. At several national shows, all dressage youngsters assembled to ride the qualifiers. The winners of each division were automatically selected for the finals. The finals, which made part of the Rabobank Paardendagen, were held at the national KWPN breeding center in Ermelo. In the second round all horses started from scratch and a jury of one breeder, one rider and one official dressage judge selected the best ten out of this group of thirty. The powerful and strong moving stallion Montecristo( by El Corona) both one first two rounds but had to give up his first place to the Guelders bred mare Mariena in the four year old division. After having followed the example of Germany with their National Young Horse Championships and their special Nobilis Cup, and Belgium with their national Young Horse Show Circuit, The Netherlands can also testify of the incredible success of special young horse shows. The Pavo Cup mostly delivered approved stallions as champions( Iglesias, Junior STV; Krack C), but this year Mariena broke the tradition and proved that mares are also dressage potential. Mariena( Zep x Natuur)- Sandra Huijnen- 433.5 points. Montecristo( El Corona x Clavecimbel)- Liseon Kamper- 430 points. Mozaiek STV( Iglesias x Uniform)- Imke Bartels- 377.5 points. Maestro( Elcaro x Wolfgang)- Heleen Van Zomeren- 358.5 points. Mitchell( Inspekteur x Zonneglans)- Marian Dorrestijn- 358 points. Lamdsburry( Darwin x Symfonie)- Nathalie Smeets- 387 points. Luzelma( Cabochon x Apollonios xx)- Adelinde Cornelissen- 361 points.

      • Abstract:
Document Excerpt: Justice Prevailed at 1999 Belgian Young Dressage Horse Championships. Belgian Dressage News:. Justice Prevailed at 1999 Belgian Young Dressage Horse Championships. A trend has been noticed that an increasing number of Belgian breeders are opting for German stallions instead of domestic sires. The overall ranking in the four year old class clearly reflected this recent evolution. Heinrich and owned by the Van Laer-De Bondt combination, rider Stefan van Ingelgem has yet another talented star in Doncaster. The gelding won the conformation and gaits class with a 313 point total; only French judge Hachez considered Belgian warmblood Saros van het Gestelhof a better type of dressage horse. Saros van het Gestelhof, bred and owned by Louis van Gestel, is a Belgian Warmblood and a BWP approved stallion by Ramiro out of a Pik Koenig dam. Although very inexperienced the Weltmeyer x Rex Magna xx offspring ran two nice tests in which his good gaits were clearly highlighted. Rider Wilfried Mondelaers steered the chestnut through the tests with great ease but could have demanded more impulsion. 1999 Young Dressage Horse Show Circuit Champion Sentio van het Goorhof now had to be pleased with an overall fourth position. Although rider Mario van Orshaegen did a great job in presenting this stallion, who's sired by Coriolan x Balzflug( 69.17%- 2nd/ 67.83%- 4th), the pair could not delete a probably rather disappointing score of 279 points gathered in the Conformation and Gaits class. Sentio especially dealt with the relatively low marks given by Herman Tollenaere( 72 points) and Cor Loeffen( 61 points) which put the dark bay on a 11th spot in that class. The Dutch Cor Loeffen made a rather strange jump in his conformation and gaits pointing system by donating 70 points to Dany Buron's Lady( Larome x Fruhlingsball) which placed the Rhinelander 5th, while overall Lady was granted a 24th position. The French judge Hachez caused an imbalance in the point system by awarding 74 points to 35th placed Lucifer, a German bred Lord Calidos x Corrado I descendant presented by Leen van Gestel. The small chestnut stallion is a pretty horse but could be more expressive in his movements. The talented Super Boogy( Randel Z x Calypso I), owned by Mrs Caals-Present and ridden by Claudia Fassaert, came in sixth. The Wolkenstein II x Wittensee son Wembley, formerly named Wetten Das at the Verden Auction, placed seventh under Michel Toussaint.

      • Abstract:
Document Excerpt: The American Saddlebred has a definite place in the sport horse world as hunt, jump, dressage or event horses. THE AMERICAN WARMBLOOD SPORT HORSE&# 133;. THE AMERICAN SADDLEBRED. The American Saddlebred is the old new sport horse: old because it was a national caliber jumping horse in the days of the U.S. Cavalry; new because its sport horse ability is being rediscovered in the US and overseas after a lengthy hiatus. The American Saddlebred is an American Warmblood: a blending of the blood of imported European stock, half-breeds and full-bloods. The true Warmblood is a very slow and deliberate breeding program, neither an accident nor a one-time cross. The Saddlebred has more than a hundred years of documented breeding to qualify as a Warmblood and a sport horse. At the same time the European breeders have changed from the utility horse to the under saddle jumping and dressage horse. Today, breeders and owners of Saddlebreds are seeking new disciplines to increase the market exposure of their horses. This description certainly sounds like an American Saddlebred. The four key words for describing a sport horse s movement are suspension, extension, elasticity and impulsion. The croup should have a moderate slope because the very flat croup usually inhibits impulsion. It is usually not practical to have to remedy mechanical defects by having to train the horse to elevate the forehand and to engage the hindquarter. The horse lifts when moving, displaying suspension, elasticity and impulsion. Traditionally Saddlebred trainers have taught the horse to hollow the back to raise the forehand rather than allowing the horse to round the back to engage the hindquarters. Saddlebreds love to jump and many a Saddlebred has competed nationally while masquerading as a Thoroughbred. Breeding stock scoring First Premium receive preliminary breeding privileges but must undergo more extensive tests at a later date before they are approved. The Second Premium horses are not recommended for breeding. Inspections for the American Warmblood Registry are held each fall in various locations around the country. The grading is tough because the American Warmblood Registry uses the Danish model approved by the World Breed Federation for Sport Horses. American Warmblood Registry judges must attend a training session in England and the next year in Germany. Each session has a practical exam which requires a minimum score to receive credentials. Sport horse buyers are looking for an over-all picture that represents the four qualities of suspension, extension, elasticity and impulsion. A local, national and international market awaits the successful marketeer.

    • Combined Driving - the Fastest growing Equine Sport - http://www.norwestcontrols.com/hcdc/aboutcde.htm
      • Abstract:
Document Excerpt: Combined Driving- the Fastest growing Equine Sport. ABOUT THE COMBINED DRIVING COMPETITION. Combined Driving is designed to test the versatility of the horse and driver. It is a three phase test( A1-Presentation, A2-Dressage; B-Marathon; and C-Cones), with each phase of the competition looking for a different aspect of the horses training and the driver's ability to work the horse. Judged on the freedom, regularity of paces, harmony, lightness, ease of movement, impulsion, and the correct positioning of the horse or pony on the move. THE WORKING TROT: This is a pace between the extended and the collected trot and is more rounded than the extended trot. The horses go forward freely and straight, engaging the hind legs with good hock action, on a taut but light rein, the position being balanced and unconstrained. The degree of energy and impulsion displayed at the working trot denotes clearly the degree of suppleness and balance of the horses. THE COLLECTED TROT: The neck is raised, thus enabling the shoulders to move with greater ease in all directions, the hocks being well engaged and maintaining energetic impulsion, despite the slower movement. As a result of great impulsion from the quarters, the horses use their shoulders, covering more ground at each step without their action becoming higher. THE REIN BACK: The rein back is a kind of walk backwards, the legs being raised and set down simultaneously by diagonal pairs, the hind legs remaining well in line and the legs being well raised. Cadence and impulsion must be retained throughout the test. Using only kilometre markers on course, a stopwatch, and the cadence of the horse's walk or trot, the driver must complete the pre-measured distances within a precisely measured period of time. When you see the drivers coming through the obstacles on the marathon, you may think that a combined driving marathon is only a test of power and speed, but it is much more than that. Unlike dressage, which is made up of set figures, the marathon presents a string of problems to be solved. Each marathon is different and presents new challenges to the horse and driver. The base of training and trust developed through the work helps the whip to make split second decisions throughout the course. Using natural or man-made obstacles, the course designer adds" Obstacles" to the course which test the horse's agility, strength, courage, and obedience as well as the skill and judgment of the whip. Some ask the horse to negotiate water crossings, tight twists through trees or even the visual problems created by lines and lines of fences or pens with narrow openings. A 5-point penalty is given for each cone knocked down or displaced. Additional penalties may be assessed for spending too long on course, for refusing to go through an obstacle, or for circling before going through an obstacle. While this allows the top placing whips to know how the competition has fared before they drive themselves, they must also drive under pressure of knowing that the difference between first and fourth place is often less than the penalties for one cone down.

Document Excerpt: Silent Auction Ratina H-1999. SILENT BIDDING. A TRIBUTE TO THE HORSE COMMUNITY. Her sire Riverman( Redfort-Landego-Calypso II) was the 1993 Reserve Champion of his Holsteiner stallion approvals in Germany, earning the title“ Top Model” of the inspection. His bonit points( conformation and movement scores) are the highest of any stallion in North America and among the highest of stallions in Germany. He has produced two daughters who have won Mare Performance testings in Germany with 10 ’ s in jumping and movement. His offspring repeatedly earn 9 ’ s and 10 ’ s for rideability and character, in both stallion and mare performance tests. His offspring in North America win USDF Breeders Championships, Devon titles, and breed show awards across the country. This filly ’ s dam is the Holsteiner mare Athena III( Caribo-Ronald-Sable Skinflint). Athena ’ s mature offspring are showing proficiency in dressage and jumping. The great jumping mare Ratina Z, the full sister to Riverman ’ s grandsire Rebel Z, is the namesake for this athletic filly. In naming this 1999 filly, we were prompted by its namesake for the purpose of identifying, in our opinion, the future of this filly in the jumper arena! Where the“ Z” in Ratina-Z applies to the Belgium breeding operation Zangerscheide, the“ H” in this filly ’ s name applies to Hilltop!. This is a Silent Bidding with 1/ 2 of the bid proceeds to be donated to New Bolton Center. The winner will be announced at the USDF Sport Horse Dinner held Saturday evening. • Reschooling The Western Horse For Dressage - http://www.horse-previews.com/598articles/reschoolingwp.html
      • Abstract:
Document Excerpt: Reschooling The Western Horse For Dressage. MAY 1998 BACK ISSUE. Part of Horse Previews Magazine website. With the rise in popularity of both dressage and the" Western" breeds, it's inevitable that some Western riders will catch the dressage bug. Perhaps you're one of those riders- or perhaps you're a confirmed dressage enthusiast whose mount didn't exactly grow up in a genteel white-polos-and-saddlepads environment. If your horse is more accustomed to jogging and loping, or turning on a dime and sliding to a stop, can he learn to half-halt and do leg-yields? The answer depends on the individual animal, says Lynn Palm Pittion-Rossillon, trainer and rider of the recently retired American Quarter Horse Association's two-time Superhorse, Rugged Lark. ( Our October 1997 issue" Salute"-ed the pair and described the dressage education on which Lynn built her training career. Horses who excel at certain of the Western disciplines simply aren't suitable for dressage. Indeed, many winning Western-pleasure horses are croup-high and withers-low- the exact opposite of the conformation that facilitates engagement and free shoulder movement for a light-on-the-forehand dressage frame. The good news is that a number of similarities exist between certain other Western disciplines and dressage. Probably the easiest Western horse to reschool for dressage is a skilled competitive-trail horse. A trail class includes maneuvers similar to those in a lower-level dressage test: turn on the forehand, turn on the haunches, controlled backing, lateral work, and exacting up and down transitions. Horses trained in Western riding, horsemanship, and reining are fairly adaptable to dressage, too. For example, the Western pivot, in which the horse pivots on his inside hind leg, changes to turn on the haunches in dressage- through the rider's inside leg directing him to stay" forward" while his hind feet continue to step around throughout the turn. After you've established that he understands and obeys these commands in hand- and respects your space- move to the next step: longeing and long-lining. And the most important concept you'll need to instill in your Western mount is" forward. You can teach him the various" go forward" commands using a combination of your voice and the unmounted driving aids, a longe whip, and the position of your body relative to his( stand so you form the apex of a triangle, with his head and hindquarters forming the other two points)- as you longe or longe-line him. I look for four things during the longeing and long-lining sessions: Is he coming over the top of his back? Is he tracking up? Is he willing to come into my hand? Is he moving forward with relaxation and elasticity? Relaxation is the key: After your horse starts to relax in the ground work, you can begin to build the idea of going forward. In reschooling a Western-trained horse for dressage, you'll have to retrain his response to the bit. Western horses are ridden in inhibiting bits: The Western curb acts on the roof and bars of the mouth, whereas an English snaffle bit acts on the corners of the mouth. Considering these things, and understanding that your horse's mouth is the most sensitive part of his body, I recommend using a type of bitless bridle called a sidepull, which works by applying leverage to the bridge of the nose when the reins are tightened. ( A sidepull is different from another type of bitless bridle, the hackamore, which acts on both the bridge of the nose and the chin. A Western horse that has been trained to keep his head down for everything will probably carry his head up when he's first freed of the confines of a Western bit. But as soon as he relaxes, his head and neck will come back down and he'll be willing and able to move forward, to carry himself in his natural frame according to his conformation, and eventually to work on the bit. After your horse has learned to relax, carry himself naturally, and go forward in the sidepull, you can introduce a simple snaffle bit. I don't go to the next step in the retraining process until I can answer yes to all the ground-work questions. It may take a few weeks, or it may take months, but I wait for the horse to tell me, by being consistently relaxed, obedient, and responsive to voice commands on the ground, that he's ready to move on to under-saddle work. After he's learned to balance with a rider at a walk, I move to a trot and then to a canter, lengthening and shortening his strides, all on a fairly loose rein. When I'm reschooling a Western horse, I teach this by gradually introducing leg, seat, and rein aids while decreasing my use of voice commands. For example, one horse I know of stopped in his tracks whenever his rider started to rise at the trot, because he was confused by her varying leg pressure and changing balance. Once he learned to respond to voice commands and understood that leg pressure accented with a light tap of the whip meant" move forward," though, he figured out that he should stay steady at the trot. You must be able to recognize when he is moving forward with good impulsion and balance; likewise, you can't help his balance unless your balance and form are correct. If you're lacking in any of these areas, educate yourself by seeking help from a knowledgeable dressage instructor( and don't hesitate to ask her for an honest assessment of your skill level), by reading books on dressage, and by watching instructional videotapes. I recommend working with an open-minded dressage trainer who has experience with all different breeds and types of horses. Besides being your" eye on the ground," she can help you formulate a training plan, set reachable goals, and document your progress. So if you have a Western-trained horse and a hankering to do dressage, go for it! In my opinion, not only is doing First or Second Level movements a fair and realistic goal for such a horse, but the whole process builds his longevity, and is great discipline for both horse and rider along the way. Her first book, on coping with travel-related family separations, was recently released by Crossway Books. Dressage& CT is published by Cowles Enthusiast Media, P.O. Of course, there's lots more in retraining the Western horse for dressage than we possibly can fit in one article. If you're serious about turning that sidepass into a leg-yield, mosey on down to your local tack shop( or pick up that equine catalogue) and get:. Dressage Principles for the Western Horse and Rider( video series) produced by Lynn Palm Pittion-Rossillon( for more information: 800-503-2824).

Document Excerpt: Untitled Document. Selecting your Morgan Dressage Horse. By Catherine Echternach. To help make your experience positive, take time before you start to look at horses to prepare for your search and above all remember to be patient. If you are a first time buyer, have your local instructor or an experienced horse owner you trust help you decide on an appropriate vet exam and I strongly suggest you have your instructor/ trainer evaluate the horse with you once you find a horse you like. Sometimes making a concise list of qualities you would like in your new horse is very clarifying; however, having a flexible idea of what you want is also important. Even though no horse will perform without the proper rider aids, a patient schoolmaster can really build your education and confidence. If you are anxious to start showing and attending clinics, and want to do" the tricks" no green horses! If you really want to start at the bottom and have the patience, your money might go further with a green horse. No matter which approach you select, it is essential to have the right help- in both evaluating and training- your new horse. Occasionally the seemingly perfect schoolmaster might need special shoeing or monthly medication that will increase your monthly costs. In this situation, there is no program established for his healthy work life so his ability to perform over time may be in jeopardy. A neck that is set on high out of the withers with a medium body coupling from the shoulder to the flank( not too long or short)- excessive length or shortness of the topline can be difficult to work with. Some Morgans have a flatter or four beat canter( as do some members of all other breeds!) and a horse with a truly flat four beat canter that cannot be improved at all should not be considered as an upper level dressage prospect. In dressage a horse must enjoy interactively taking directions as the horse is constantly being challenged to do transitions, turns, or move sideways. When you're trying to marry these basic physical and mental qualities with your" ideal" Morgan dressage partner, also keep these ideas in mind. What Morgan temperament is the best? For dressage,- try to avoid a really hot Morgan which might be better suited to another discipline. A" hot" horse is not always spooky, but often has trouble focusing, being still, or performing transitions. Avoid them! But at the same time, don't pass by a horse simply because it is targeted or trained for non-sport divisions. Many horses bred for the show divisions are super athletes which, when coupled with a quieter temperament, make wonderful dressage mounts. When looking at a green horse, look for a Morgan that is willing to move easily within the gaits without excessive tension. Consider the horse's past history and training and what you plan to do. Most sport Morgans can change sport divisions or easily perform within 2 or 3 different divisions all under the sport umbrella without complete re-training- i.e. However it may not be as easy to move from an English Pleasure or Park background to dressage without extensive re-training. It is very important to evaluate your abilities and your horse's past history. A Park or English Pleasure horse often can be re-trained for dressage by the right person, but that can be a more difficult task, requiring more expertise than retraining a hunter. Horses with serious problems on the pre-purchase exam or that show dangerous behavior are no bargain. Avoid them! On the other hand, a not perfect horse( physically) with a manageable problem may be a very good match- just be sure you are educated in regards to the problem and understand the ramifications for long term maintenance. However the correct and regular help of a trainer is really important in this situation. To close, Morgans make wonderful dressage mounts, so take the time to find the right partner for you and enjoy your new Morgan! But to make the most of your partnership, make sure you have a good riding situation, good trainer/ instructor, and a good vet standing on the sidelines to help. The author is a professional dressage rider, trainer and teacher who lives and works in Germantown, Md. Cathy has trained and competed successfully on many breeds, including Morgans. She found her current FEI mount, Whippoorwill Ebony( aka Black Tie), as a very green, recently gelded 8-year-old, and now Cathy and her 13-year-old, 14.3 black gelding are winning at Intermediare II in recognized competitions with scores in the mid-60s. This article was written for the August 1999 edition of" The Morgan Horse" and is one of a series of articles that will appear periodically authored by Morgan Dressage Association board members on Morgans and Dressage.

Sales Horses|| Performance Results|| Awards Program.

    • SHC part 2 - http://www.americantrakehner.com/SportHorse%20Conformation/SHCpart2.htm
      • Abstract:
Document Excerpt: Sport Horse Conformation And The Breeder. A horizontal pelvic bone makes flexion more difficult and may lead to a chronic hollow back which is prone to injury. The muscles of the quarters- the gluteus medius, femoral biceps, semi-tendinosis and semi-membranosis- must be large, evenly and well developed. open angled, post-legged( over-straight; usually coon-footed). These horses often show an impressive walk due to a significant overstride, but at the trot, seen from behind, the horse in often bow-legged, and the hocks move in a' wobbly fashion, rotating to the outside before straightening when the weight is transferred to the other foot. • The Use of Dressage with the Paso Fino Horse - http://www.pasofino.cc/dressage.htm
      • Abstract:
Document Excerpt: Dressage is a mystical word that keeps popping up in all kinds of horse breeds and all kinds of riding. A form of riding that I once viewed as a dreaded precursor to jumping, dressage has taken on greater significance to assist all types of riders and horses. Put basically, dressage comes from the French word: dressuer, which means to train. By employing these exercises and riding in the manner prescribed, dressage improves the balance and communication between horse and rider. This type of riding and training is centuries old and was employed by mounted cavalry to enhance the horse's ability to carry its rider and execute combat maneuvers required to keep both horse and rider safe and to defeat the enemy. These very same maneuvers were also employed by mounted bullfighters. It is the legacy of these cavalry and bullfighting moves which are still in existence today and which form the heart of the dressage levels through which the horses are schooled. The most well-known dressage horses are the Lippizans of the Spanish Riding School of Vienna and their cousins, the Andalusians, who are a Spanish breed that our Paso Finos are descended from. over the past 40 years and has increased in popularity since the late 1970's as a beneficial exercise for all types of horses and all riding styles. Dressage itself is an Olympic discipline and there are a series of levels that a horse proceeds through on its way from Training Level to Grand Prix, which is the level shown at the Olympics. At each level, a series of exercises should be mastered and ultimately tested in a ridden test to demonstrate the horse's ability to perform correctly at that level and subsequently to move on to the next level. These dressage tests specifically call for maneuvers and changes of extension and collection at the three paces of walk, trot and canter. As the horse moves through the levels, the degree of suppleness, willingness and ability for extension and collection progress until the horse can attain the ultimate in" one-ness" with its rider and achieves self-carriage. The same balance, suppleness, communication and ability for extension and collection are what make great Paso Finos able to turn heads at the largo, corto or fino! And just like that Grand Prix horse or marathon runner, it takes a truly athletic individual to be able to execute the fino style of gait, but dressage can help that individual to get there. The most important thing to remember in pursuing dressage is that a Paso Fino is not a trotting breed and does have different conformation and carriage than most trotting breeds for which dressage was originally designed. What this means is that you should not try to turn your Paso Fino into a dressage horse, but should apply the wonderful exercises and methods available in dressage to enhance the performance of your horse. There are few dressage trainers who are familiar with the Paso Fino, so it is a good idea to work with a dressage trainer on a dressage horse, learn the seat, hand, breathing and leg aids on a trotting breed. If you can attain the ability to ride well on a dressage horse through second( or maybe even third) level, you will truly understand balance and communication and can apply these things as well as the dressage suppling exercises to your Paso Fino. Some things to watch out for with dressage- The dressage rider and trainer do not generally look for quickness of footfall, and actually want a horse with slower footfall and more impulsion from the hind for greater suspension, or air time, in the trot and canter. The desire for impulsion from the hind end is the same, though, so many dressage exercises that improve power and rear drive will help the Paso Fino, just be sure not to forget about quickness of footfall. I can put the most naturally-gaited horse into trocha by going into my" sitting trot" position:-) When you are back on your Paso Fino, be sure to tighten the lower back and apply more firm pressure to the stirrups through your legs if you suddenly find your horse slipping out of gait. While we are talking about position, be aware that the trotting horse does not usually have the natural energy to go forward that your Paso Fino does, so you will be using leg a lot more to keep that dressage horse forward. As you progress in your training to lateral( side to side) work, dressage exercises excel at helping your horse to find and use each one of his four legs individually, which enhances his clarity of gait. This improves the horse's ability to get his hind end" underneath" him to improve his impulsion or rear drive. Once all this is happening, you can begin the exercises to improve the lengthening and shortening of stride, which translates to your largo and corto( and fino if your horse is so inclined). Many dressage exercises work at stretching your horse's muscles after a hard work-out and this is very important to our naturally high-headed and tense-backed Paso Finos who really benefit from these walking and stretching cool-downs. All of this combines to improve the communication you have with your horse and to take him to the peak of his athletic ability whether you ride for show or pleasure.

Document Excerpt: Type, Colour& Conformation. Appaloosa Type, Breed Characteristics and Conformation. The Appaloosa is an average sized light horse with most standing 14.2 to 15.2 hands at the withers and weighing about 1000 lbs. The modern Appaloosa continues to display the same qualities so highly valued by the Nez Perce and the early frontiersmen-- versatility, endurance and temperament. These bloodlines show a predisposition to specifically desired physical traits and behaviors. For example, some bloodlines are renowned for their speed in racing and gymkhana events, some display exceptional cow sense for cutting and roping, others are jumpers or dressage horses. The stereotypical coloured Appaloosa is a dark body with a spotted or white blanket over the loin and hips. Appaloosas share three characteristics: Mottled or freckled skin( parti-coloured), most noticeable around the muzzle, eyes and genitalia; Hooves have clearly defined vertical light and dark stripes, a trait that gives them exceptionally durable hooves; and eyes have a white sclera encircling the iris much like that of the human eye.

      • Abstract:
Document Excerpt: Springhill Farm Questions 3/ 14/ 2000. If you have a question you'd like answered. Anne says: Thanks for sending in the questions! I ll try to answer all of them by email. If this area can be stretched by pulling the horse's leg forward, I also might try that for a few minutes before and after riding. Question: What does the relationship between the length of a horse's front leg to the elbow and the elbow to the withers have to do with the horse's movement?. Whenever you discuss a horse's conformation, you are talking about a happy. Too long and it puts too much stress on the tendons and is weak, although this would make for springy elastic gaits; but too short and there would be too much concussion, making the horse uncomfortable to ride and predisposing to arthritic conditions such as sidebones and ringbone. This sort of horse will not have good front-o-back balance which is needed to negotiate varied terrain. So, you keep your legs in the normal position, against the horse's sides for security& balance. If the colt s parents are good movers and are comfortable to ride, and they have produced other offspring that are, then the chances of this colt being a smooth, comfortable mover are greatly increased. Do you have any suggestions as to how to stop doing this? The horse I ride most often, and seem to have the biggest bouncing problem with, has a very big canter gait, and I know my bouncing isn't comfortable for either one of us. You will notice that the farther back your shoulders go, the farther forward your knees go. When you go out on the road, keep the lead pony between the youngster and traffic so you go on the right side of the road, with the youngster on the shoulder. If you are leading a spunky youngster, especially an ungelded colt, I. This tests the horse's ability to stay on the bit and to stretch his topline. It is a powerful gymnastic and also a very basic training exercise. As the head comes up, your elbows will move backwards, keeping your contact, until you are in your original position. bringing your shoulders back so you do not tip forward and disturb his. The judge is looking for a positive contact and an elastic stretch, then a smooth transition back to the higher head position. When you get to the levels where collection and extension are required, she might not get as high scores on her lengthenings as lighter horses, but she would. Question: I used to board and take lessons at a dressage stable where they were obsessed with advancing the horses as quickly as possible. The purpose of dressage is to develop the horse s physique and abilities so that he becomes stronger and more supple. This will enable him to perform movements easily which require greater strength, balance and flexibility. An instructor must be, first and foremost, a horseman who understands the physiology of the horse and who never uses any training methods which are detrimental to him. You may be interested in reading my article" How to Get the Most from Instruction" Part 2" Qualities of a Good Instructor." Find yourself an instructor who understands and is sympathetic to horses and continue with your education. Practice the movements in the tests, but break them up and try them in different locations. This is considerably less to memorize than the way the test is written. Also, mark out a mini-arena( about 4x8 feet I use the hall rug it's the right size) and practice walking through the test. Anne says: Rushers are usually made by the rider s hands. You need to work with your instructor to make sure you aren t causing the problem by tensing up, pinching with your legs, leaning too far forward, or taking too strong a hold on the horse s mouth.) Because you are holding the opposite rein tightly against the horse s neck, the bit will not be pulled through his mouth, nor will his head be pulled to the side. Trot-walk-trot transitions will get your horse listening to your slowing down aids and teaches her to shift her weight back: Ride a nice rhythmic trot, not too fast, then walk( sit up straight, close your fingers, bring your shoulders back. Broken lines( zig-zags) will improve your pony s steering and give you control of her shoulders: Ride at a rhythmic trot. ( Although normally this exercise is done with your leg slightly behind the girth, if you keep your leg at the girth, it will be more beneficial for your purposes of keeping her on the track. Question: What involves a working student? And what do you have to know?. The working student position can be a wonderful opportunity or drudgery, depending on the situation. • Finding a Dressage Horse - http://www.aber.ac.uk/~cap96/classic/horseman/ideal.html
      • Abstract:
Document Excerpt: Finding a Dressage Horse. Anxious Riders. I'd look at the bloodline, to see if there were any problems to anticipate( soundness, conformation, character), see the parents whereever possible,( moving and under saddle would be best), look at older horses from the same stock, and collect those impressions. In the individual I'd look for a friendly face, a curious, not hypersentive or bullyish approach; free, flowing, elastic movements, active hindlegs, when worked in a school the horse should stretch down of his own accord, not hollow and give giraffe impressions( much easier to work correctly). The horse should lead well, you should be able to pick up his feet etc, he should move over when asked etc- if he has already learned those ground manners, it is less likely he will develop an attitude problem when being ridden. While slight unsoundness( arthritis) in a schoolmaster may be manageable, a dressage horse should be as sound as you can possibly imagine. perfect conformation( a well muscled horse can overcome slight disadvantages, but I'd stay away from anything that seriously inhibits movement). Colour( obvious, but many dressage riders prefer dark brown or black- greys or washed-out chestnuts might therefore be a lot cheaper). You can usually judge the manner of gaits in youngsters of all stages, although the conformation may vary greatly according to age. Personally, I'd rather have a well-trained horse of average ability, but willing to perform 100 percent, that a high-flying individual that is hard work to ride. A partner? Do you just want to do dressage, or do you want an allrounder that's also a dressage horse? Obviously, if you want to compete at high levels, you will look for something that is competitive.

    • Jan Philipsson - Breeding Seminar - http://wbstallions.com/wb/swana/SWAPHILIP.HTML
      • Abstract:
Document Excerpt: Jan Philipsson- Breeding Seminar. Jan Philipsson- Both for SWANA and the USDF Breeding Seminar. Philipsson was at Hilltop to do USDF Breeding Seminars( for both judges and the general breeding public), SWANA was able to take advantage of his presence for a fascinating afternoon. He presented a condensed version of the breeding seminar, focusing a bit more on the Swedish horse and his own horses. Especially inspiring were Jan's personal videos of his horses and family, which illustrate that he practices what he preaches. Philipsson talked a little about the history of the Swedish horse, but mainly he stressed breeding methodology and results. Philipsson talked a little about his own history and how he came into his career, including a university stint here in the United States. He is currently in Upsala at the University of Agricultural Sciences. Indeed his methods of using statistics in the prediction of heritability of traits is a science. Early influences in this development came from the Trakehner and Hannovarian bloodlines. The Swedish horse has been traditionally known as an excellent dressage horse, with quite a few successes in the eventing world. Later introductions of outside bloodlines have been to improve the jumping ability of the breed. Choices for breeding should be carefully considered, and Philipsson continued with the rest of the presentation to give some of the tools available aid in making wise choices. Philipsson put up a very interesting time line, with the introduction of different methodology and tools to the Swedish breeding program. New Performance testing of stallions- trial, developed rapidly( with excellent evaluators like Erik Lette) Early years 18/ 20 approved, now 20/ 120 approved. National Championships for 4-Year Old Horses( based on Riding Horse Quality Test). SWEDE Horse( Started as a big" show" combining breeding and performance, now a company). New testing of 3-year-old horses modeled on the Riding Horse Quality Test. From this time line, Jan leaped into the principals for developing a modern breeding program. The first thing that one needs to do is establish the objective of your breeding program. Philipsson suggests," A versatile, noble, easily ridden and sound sport horse with good movements and temperament and that it is suitable for different riding disciplines, also at the international level," with a priority for either jumping or dressage. Once the objective is set, there needs to be a methodology of getting there and of judging the results. One must judge and evaluate horses included in the breeding program. Ten sons of Brabant were approved before this method of stallion testing was instituted, they were very athletic individuals. Ten sons failed after subjected to free jumping for reasons of temperament. Philipsson also advocated importing a couple of good stallions every year to add to the breeding program as well, specially selected for bloodlines and traits. One of the best tools for evaluation of breeding results is the Riding Horse Quality Test( RHQT) that is administered in Sweden. This test was developed for all 4-year-olds, and 5-year-olds mares that are shown late because of foaling. With horse breeding, the sooner you can evaluate your results, the better, since production of a quality riding horse takes a lot of time and expense. Philipsson was quite adamant about competition coming too late in a horse's life to be a proper tool for evaluating a horse, and an inconsistent measure as well. Jan felt that the best mares should be evaluated and bred as 3-year-olds and then returned to training and perhaps competition. So, the RHQT becomes a very important tool for evaluating young mares to go back into the breeding population. 3-year-old horses are also given a score as a dressage and a jumping prospect to help breeders and prospective buyers in marketing and channeling horses. Of course Philipsson believes that experienced breeders should know what they have and be confident enough to breed the good young mares that they've produced. He also believes that training continues for mares with only short interruptions for foaling. A large percentage of Sweden's horse population undergoes the Riding Horse Quality Test, and these scores are entered into the computer for analysis. A mare can be assigned an initial BLUP from either her own performance in the RHQT or the performance of at least one offspring. This use of statistical modeling on such a small scale might give the North American hope for the use of these tools in our own breeding program. Mikael Holmström's work is also important and compliments this statistical work in that Holmström's work allows a horse's conformation to be recorded and evaluated in a numeric and objective manner. An interesting observation by Philipsson is that the German's use of BLUP is different and tries to correct for too many factors, perhaps limiting its usefulness. Jan talked a bit about a more global breeding program for sporthorses, which I'll talk about later in the article when I discuss the USDF Breeding Seminar. Much of the material covered for SWANA members was repeated and expanded on over the rest of the weekend. The BLUP used in Sweden allows the distinction between heritable traits and environmental ones. Jumping ability is much lower, but it is climbing as breeding programs are selecting intensely for jumping in Sweden. With the betterment of sporthorses, the average has climbed to 107. Important for the breeder producing a product for the general public. Pelvic inclination has decreased in the general population, and this is good for producing better moving dressage horses. What these factors indicates is that use of modern breeding techniques, including BLUP really does work to produce better horses. In a time lapse effect, Jan showed us video of them at different points in their lives, and in every case, the horse was improved by training and became an excellent performer. Another son of Napoleon, as are Amiral and Bombay. Extremely good at passage and piaffe, not as forward reaching, a little jumpy in his movement. Conformation means certain things, but not all, for instance Maistic has a sloped croup. Adds a lot to Swedish breeding, both dressage horses and jumpers. Indexes high in jumping and his offspring are high in competition results. Since I had traveled all the way from Colorado to attend the SWANA meeting, I could not turn down the opportunity to spend further time with Dr. Philipsson and elected to stay for the breeding seminar. It would prove to be a very enjoyable weekend, meeting some friends who don't breed SWB horses as well. The lecture portion of the weekend went over much of the same ground that was covered so well for SWANA members, so they had a wonderful opportunity. In judging and commenting on the horses, Jan invited Ekkehard Brysch and Dieter Felgendreher, both of the ISR and experienced sporhorse judges to join him in judging and commenting on the horses. Scott Hassler also added his comments, since all the horses shown were either bred or imported by Hilltop Farm, and Scott's comments provided an interesting background from a breeder's perspective. It was an interesting experience, and the opinions on the horses shown, all of them horses that any of us would love to own, were quite close, showed remarkably little divergence. While I couldn't stay to watch the showing of stallions on Sunday, I did get to see Riverman presented at one point. It was amazing to see the bond between Riverman and his Swedish student handler, the stallion stepped out even more extravagantly as his handler leaped along with him. However Jan thought she was worth breeding, even though he advised breeders to turn around their mare population periodically to modernize the product. The breeding stock at Hilltop is of uniformly high quality. It's a treat to see them very peacefully coexisting with very few barriers between them and no bickering. I asked if Swedish bloodlines would ever have a place in the Hilltop breeding program, and was told that Hilltop had just bought the Swedish stallion Navarino. While Navarino will be continuing his competition career in Europe, semen will be available in North America through Hilltop. Of course, something that was emphasized while we were having all these horses presented to us, many of the weanlings, yearlings and 2-year-olds, is that it is very hard to judge young horses in all their growth stages. Scott often talked about that, saying," we saw this horse at 3-months and younger, we know its parents and we're confident that this horse will be an excellent adult. May all our breeding programs become as good and as successful as Hilltop's!.

    • USDF Programs: Procedures to Host USDF DSHB Materiale Classes - http://www.usdf.org/programs/sport_horse/materiale_procedures.html
      • Abstract:
Document Excerpt: USDF Programs: Procedures to Host USDF DSHB Materiale Classes. Dedicated to education, the recognition of achievement, and the promotion of the sport of dressage. USDF Programs: Dressage Sport Horse Breeding: Procedures to Host USDF DSHB Materiale Classes. At the 1999 USDF Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado, the USDF Sport Horse Committee approved the immediate implementation of" Materiale" classes for three year olds and the mature horse age groups of four and five year olds. To be offered for the first time in 2000 at AHSA/ USDF recognized shows, these classes will combine under saddle evaluation at the walk, trot and canter, with in-hand evaluation for conformation, and a general impression score based on the overall under saddle and in-hand performance. In addition, the Sport Horse Committee will provide procedures to shows and judges on the rules and conduct of these classes, and intends to promote the inclusion of Materiale classes in Dressage as well as DSHB shows. Materiale classes are not part of the Cosequin( R)/ USDFBC Series, and scores from Materiale classes do not count for 2000 USDF DSHB Horse of the Year Awards. Materiale Classes must be conducted according to the following rules and procedures:. Horses will be evaluated according to the criteria listed on the" USDF Dressage Sport Horse Prospects Under Saddle" Individual Scoresheet. A separate USDF Dressage Sport Horse Prospects Under Saddle Individual Scoresheet must be used for each entry in a USDF Materiale class. If necessary, classes can be combined as follows: Three-year old Fillies may be shown with Four and Five-year old Mares, and Three-year old Colts and Geldings may be shown with Four and Five-Year old Stallions and Geldings. However, classes for Fillies and Mares may NOT be combined with classes for Colts, Geldings or Stallions, and horses may NOT be asked to lengthen stride at trot or canter when Three-year olds are shown together with older horses. After all horses have completed the under saddle portion of the class, the riders will be asked to line up and dismount to prepare for in-hand conformation judging. A maximum of four minutes will be allowed from the time handlers and/ or assistant handlers are permitted to enter the ring to the start of in-hand judging. Horses may be presented in-hand by the rider, handler or assistant handler. A handler or assistant handler may prepare or present one or more horses for in-hand judging, as long as it does not delay the completion of the class. During the under saddle portion of the class, it is strongly recommended that the size of the groups be limited to six horses for cantering, depending on the size of the arena, and if classes are held in a standard dressage arena, no more than six horses should be worked under saddle at the same time. For large Materiale classes, shows are advised to provide a sufficient number of secretarial and scoring assistants for the judge( s). ( AHSA-licensed dressage judges are eligible for a maximum of two Guest Cards for DSHB per lifetime), or. ( Foreign Breeding Experts must meet certain criteria to be on the approved list, and are eligible to receive an unlimited number of Guest Cards. Dressage shows wishing to offer Materiale classes must indicate that they will offer" Dressage Sport Horse Breeding" classes on their application for AHSA recognition. If a show decides to offer Materiale( or any other DSHB) classes after their AHSA recognition has already been approved, the show must inform the AHSA Competitions Department that DSHB classes have been added to the schedule.
