      Document Excerpt: Dressage- a definition. Dressage-- a definition. Dressage is one of the three Olympic equestrian disciplines. It is a programme of suppling, balancing and obedience work that prepares a horse for future pleasure-riding or competition, Western or English. One of the most popular horse sports," combined training", includes a dressage test as part of the competition format. In dressage training, the natural movements a horse can make on his own, free in the pasture, are repeated as exercises. These range from simple patterns and circles at the walk, trot and canter to movements in extreme collection, such as the piaffe( which is actually part of the showing-off of the stallion). This mobilizing and strengthening of the hindquarters( which provide the motive power as if the horse had rear wheel drive) results in lightening of the forehand and a horse that is much easier to steer and to stop. It is a matter of physics; the horse's immense strength becomes more available to him as he uses himself more efficiently. Because of the obedience required in the exercises, this strength is also instantly available to the rider. These tests reflect the movements used in schooling and so, assess the horse's correct progress towards the goals of suppleness, balance and obedience. Tests are of increasing levels of difficulty, and range from Basic levels( within the reach of every horse and rider) to the difficult demands of tests at the International level. At the more advanced levels, you will see equine specialists( and dedicated riders), all athletes of the highest degree. Many have expressed the opinion that in the kur rides, the sport of dressage comes closest to the art of ballet. Jorrit- Since Jorrit is 14 years old, we felt it prudent to utilize him in our breeding program as much as possible this year. I believe you can appreciate that with his high level of attainment and the tremendous cut in the shoulder he will be an excellent sire. We own his first born colt, Tiberius von Jorrit and his first born filly Willow von Jorrit. Both of these foals have received a Premie I at their weanling judging. The third is in California and was unable last year to be judged but from the pictures he also carries the Jorrit confirmation and movement characteristics. On her own she is an excellent Forward Moving Friesian and competed successfully in The Netherlands in Cross Country Jumping. Her disposition is exceptional and she is extremely trainable. Xanadu PM- Charlotte Bredahl-Baker a member of the 1992 US Olympic Equestrian Team found this lovely mare in California. We decided to utilize embryo transfer to propagate this bloodline. Sapphire is almost 17 hands with incredible movement, nobility and trainability. We are extremely anxious to see this foal and we are certain that this foal will be an exceptional prospect.

Indoor Brabant is one of the World s great equestrian venues and the Dutch are keen, and informed, spectators. Still they show their appreciation for a smooth, sweet test from the' guinea pig- a bay daughter of Aktion( Gylla Dallos great campaigner who is to retire this weekend). Frenchwoman, Marietta Almasy is really going for it, on her Russian bred Trakehner, Quixote Pavarotti. At the end of the first half, young Dutch rider, Barbara Koot has grabbed the lead on her Aktion gelding, Berkenhorst Galliano, with a score of 1342( 65.46%) and the seats have started to fill. The crowd cheers the pair as they enter the arena- suddenly the photographers are out in force and Bonnie is dancing his way in passage around the arena. So engaged so forward in the trot work- so elevated in passage- so rhythmic in piaffe- so graceful in the extended trot. Bonfire shuffles out, ears pricked, peeping cheekily at his loving fans. Arjen Teeuwissen s Goliath is so different from Bonfire- bigger, looser in every way and they have a real chance to grab first round lead. Perfect extended trot, glorious flowing half pass, everything about the work is so free- the piaffe looks easy but not quite enough height behind at times. Where Bonfire is electric, Goliath looks so relaxed. It s allowed under the rules to provide your own' background for the Grand Prix, but truly this worked more closely than many freestyle scores. Richard Davison riding Hiscox Askari demonstrates just how much regular appearances on the European circuit can help your score. At last year s World Cup Final, Souveraen was an excitement machine, sadly some of the magic seems to have gone- although the final piaffe/ passage reminds us of it. Just to make sure the crowd is' tuned the organisers play' Song Sung Blue over and over again as a warmup theme- and the Anky fans( that s about 99% of the spectators) are humming and whistling along- they are going to be at fever pitch by the time the home town girl enters the now totally packed Brabanthalle. I resisted the temptation to join the 3000 souls in the hall yesterday to see the final rehearsal to music for each of the 15 finalists- I want to experience maximum impact when the real thing happens. The freestyle is running the reverse order of the Grand Prix scores, so the Canadian, Gina Smith is first out on her grey Purioso gelding, Fledermaus- he s a sweet, obliging chap and trying his heart out for Gina- but sometimes the work gets a bit too hard for him. Go Rozzie! What s happened? Jocky has gone unlevel on the extended trot- Rozzie stops, looks down, retires- and now your heart is breaking. Rog has photos of it and has given it to the TD, Mariette Withages- that s some small comfort- unless some serious damage has been done. The Danish rider, Hans Jorgen Norgaard gets a 68.44 even with a piaffe that looks as if Silvaldo is kicking out at a close up blue cattle dog. Stefan Peter from Austria scores 67.78 on Bon Voyage 2; Marietta Alamasy and Quixote Pavarotti scores 66.68%, while Elena Sidneva s Podhod looks in danger of tanking completely, but still scores 65.36%( she wouldn t have got that score in Australia!). Barbara Koot is an exciting new Dutch face, and making a serious bid for Sydney selection on Berkenhorst Galliano( by Aktion, who seems to have been doing farewell performances on the hour over the past couple of days). The work is powerful, clean and correct but she has some horrible abrupt changes in her music and most of it is of the synthesised moronic beat beat bang variety. Richard Davison and Hiscox Askari for Great Britain- it s a bit sticky getting the passage gear going- then it clicks into place and the piaffe/ passage work is a delight. Once again the passage is let down by the sideways stepping piaffe but what a passage! And what beautiful extended trot( and tasteful, timeful, music) Fabulous transition from extended trot to walk and the horse is so loose and swinging in the back in the walk. Antony and Isabell Werth( who has confirmed that she is definitely coming to Dressage with the Stars- Michael Klimke told her what a good show it was and how much he enjoyed his visit). Lovely extended trot and flowing half pass- but once again he grounds in front in the piaffe( did the Beatles ever imagine their tunes would be so popular with horses??) The tail is swishing in the one times changes and again he plants all four on the floor before producing piaffe. Amazing passage entry to the sound of castanets( hello Jerez?) Horrid halt, magnificent half passes and breath-taking piaffe so large so even, and the extended trot is awesome. NEWS FLASH- Exellent has come through an operation to his hoof well.

For six weeks this fall Erin Casco Bay and I had quite an opportunity- training with Michael Poulin and his wife Sharon at their School of Dressage in Fairfield, Maine. By each of the turn-out areas a small, elderly pony was tethered as a companion for the occupant. It was quite apparent from the start that the primary emphasis at this school is quality dressage training for both horse and rider and TOP equine care. The day after our arrival we worked lightly in a lesson taught by Sharon as Michael was in flight with Graf George and Bombadier from Germany to Canada where they would finish the last thirty days of the post-Olympic quarantine. All the teaching is positive and forward, with the emphasis on getting the horse to stretch into the bit, and move forward from behind, and keeping the horse between the inside leg and a steady outside rein. The words" forward, rounder, lower, deeper and PRAISE HIM!!" resound with consistency when either Michael or Sharon is teaching. This positive, rewarding, and relaxed method of teaching makes an atmosphere in which both horse and rider can make mistakes and learn in confidence, even when an Olympic Bronze Medal Team member is teaching!!. This is typical of his teaching expertise: when a movement is new to both horse and rider, he sets up a situation where the horse can learn the movement in a positive manner while the rider gets the correct feel for it. Sharon Poulin is a great teacher as well, with an eye for the correct dressage position of the rider and how it affects the horse. Their consistent and positive approach make their teaching stay with you; the level of excellence all around us, as we shared lessons with such horses as Bombadier, Lighten Up Jack, Boleem, and Brilliant, make this rider and her trustworthy Connemara partner keep an enthusiastic, positive, and purposeful approach to training. Gretchen Singleton was Professor of Equitation Studies at Lake Erie College, Ohio, for 15 years, and Director of Riding at Foxcroft School, Virginia, for two years. Reigning World and European Dressage Champion, Isabell Werth and Gigolo today took the first steps, a beautifully executed piaffe, toward the team Gold Medal at the Olympic Games. It was expected that Isabell and Gigolo would perform well at these Games, especially after their performance at Aachen, which garnered them a score of 80%. She won top marks from four of the five judges; Peeters of The Netherlands at M, Mechlem of Germany at H, Maurel of France at B, and Lette from Sweden at C. Sven Rothenberger of The Netherlands and Weyden were the third highest scorers with 74.16%. Denmark's individual rider, Lars Petersen and Uffe Korshojgaard head the list of the riders in the 60 percentile. Next in the rankings is Tineke Bartels-DeVries and Olympic Barbria. Annette Solmell of Sweden and Strauss, in their first Olympic appearance, performed a solid test that was overall very consistent which the score of 67.60% indicated. Solmell is a wonderful role model for all true amateur riders, as she holds down a full-time regular job and rides in her spare time. Baucher was a Frenchman who heavily influenced the French style of dressage. Seeger was a student of Max Ritter von Weyrother of the Spanish Riding School, and was very influential in the German school of dressage, as he was the instructor of Gustav Steinbrecht. We then make the transition to the normal seat or to the chair seat according to whether the back or hindquarters need to develop more strength after this preparatory stage. Our center of gravity varies from case to case as necessary during both our training sessions and the breaks between lessons. If the horse is sufficiently prepared to transfer the weight to the back through the flexion of the haunches while remaining in balance, we cause him to do this with a momentary action of the hand( half-halt). Our first preparation of the future riding horses consists of soothing him while the horse is accustomed to the saddle and bridle on the longe, and to familiarize the horse with the effect of the cavesson or the snaffle. Achieving the willingness to step up to the bit requires the presence of a helper holding a whip, sometimes softly touching the horse with it, but never hitting him. This first lesson is over as soon as the horse begins to take a steady contact on the bit with relatively raised head and neck, and is willing to be mounted while maintaining a more or less correct head carriage. We have no other method to increase flexion in the haunches than the driving forward of the hind legs and the corresponding transfer of weight from the head and neck to the hindquarters. In order to not disturb the mechanics of the movement during this training period, nothing other than the forward reaching movement of the hind legs should be asked. Only after sufficient training can the transfer of weight be induced with the rider's hand. Now we have to talk about Baucher's degree of preparation, which in certain cases corresponds to our training. Hereby, Baucher strives for the same goal as we, namely, to confirm the carrying capacity of the shoulders of the horse, but his means are completely different from ours. If the horse takes a contact on our hands, and we have begun to develop the pushing power of the hind end for the most part, we strive to produce in him full freedom of the shoulders. Lunging is especially important for green horses, because their muscles aren't strong enough to carry a rider and move freely at the same time. Side reins are a valuable tool when lunging, because they allow the horse to relax while developing a trusting contact with the bit. Test to see if the back is relaxed by encouraging him to stretch his nose forward and down at the walk and trot. Allowing the horse to walk on a loose rein in the warm up and cool down phases will solidify the rhythmic and long steps that are necessary in a dressage horse. The horse must step with equal energy in both hind legs towards the bit, thus lifting his forehand with every stride and lightening the pressure on the reins. The young horse's frame will be longer than a horse at a higher level, who is expected to have developed a measure of collection, but he must show at least the beginnings of self-carriage. He must not lean on his rider's hands for support, but he can use them to a certain degree to help balance himself. Each transition and half-halt will shift his weight momentarily onto the haunches, strengthening them and suppling them, and at the same time, improving his balance. At Training Level, the horse should be able to bend equally to both sides on a 20 meter circle, be more or less straight in his body, which he should be if he can bend equally to both sides, begin to carry himself in balance, maintain an even contact on both reins without resistance, be relaxed in his back, exhibit correct gaits and rhythm, and be obedient. One must remember that proper contact and head carriage is a result of relaxation and suppleness.) and longitudinally supple( achieved with transitions and half-halts), then he will relax onto the bit of his own accord. When the horse stretches onto the bit, which can be tested with the exercise" forward, down, and out," then the first step has been taken towards the development of proper contact. In order to do a flying change, that is, switch leads in the canter without breaking stride, the horse has to be straight and in balance. Common mistakes the rider can make are: being tense in the waist, leaning forward, putting the new outside leg back too late, sitting too fast and too heavily on the new in side seat bone, and using too powerful leg aids. The pirouette can be three sizes: the half-pirouette is 180 degrees and consists of 3-4 strides, the three quarter( 270 degrees) pirouette consists of 4-6 strides, and the full pirouette( 360 degrees) can be completed in 6-8 strides. Perhaps the toughest challenge in performing the pirouette correctly is deciding on the proper tempo. Canter-trot transitions will help his looseness; circles, voltes and lateral movements will increase his straightness; halts, half-halts and rein-backs will improve his collection; and turn on the forehand will work on his obedience. Piaffe is basically balancing the horse between the rider's hands and legs. You'll need someone to stand at the horse's shoulder and hold the lunge line. Make sure the horse remains straight, and to maintain the forward motion, allow him to move about one hoofprint forward. With your legs and seat, shorten his trot strides until he takes a few piaffe steps( trot-halt transitions with ever decreasing trot periods are useful). Piaffe from collected trot should be practiced until he can move from the piaffe directly into passage. This article has been entered into the USDF national newsletter competition by the Central Texas Dressage Society. In April 1999, I had the good fortune of training with Karl Mikolka, former Oberbereiter of the Spanish Riding School and coach of the Brazilian dressage team. Riding with him is to have the combined knowledge of the masters at your disposal: Gueriniere, Weyrother, Seeger, Podhajsky, Steinbrecht, etc. The first time I rode with him I was a bit intimidated because of his status as modern-day master, but it was an exhilarating experience to have the full attention of one of the dressage greats focused on me and my horse. In my translation of Louis Seeger's Herr Baucher und seine Kuenste. Ein ernstes Wort an Deutschlands Reiter( 1852), I have come across some of the same methodology and techniques that Karl still teaches, ones from the Old School that have become quite rare in today's dressage training. Some of these include the Hankensprung, Aufrichten, stirrup-stepping, full pass, the" windmill," as well as the alternative means of straightening the shoulder-in by bringing the haunches in line with the shoulders. A lot of Karl's teaching is aimed at improving the suppleness of the horse, making the horse instantly obedient to the rider's aids, and making the horse accept weight in the haunches, thereby improving the gaits and preserving the horse's soundness through balanced movement. Karl helped us in raising the horse's head in the beginning, but the horse is theoretically supposed to be so obedient to the reins that when the rider lifts his hands, the horse raises his head. The full pass tests the horse's obedience to the rider's legs as well as improves the suppleness of the horse's haunches because he must bend in the joints of the hind legs in order to step over. By trotting right, halting and then asking for a full-pass towards the right, the rider tests the horse's obedience to the outside( left) leg. The rider can use this technique to produce a rocking-horse canter by stepping into the inner stirrup when the inside fore is on the ground, and then on the outside stirrup when the outside hind is on the ground. If the rider brings the haunches in behind the forelegs, he obeys the rider's outside leg, while putting more weight momentarily onto the hind legs. The" windmill" is a means of correcting a horse that is stiff and disobedient to the leg aids, and who refuses to move forward. For example, if the horse ignores the rider's right leg, the rider should turn the horse to the right( right hand at the knee, aimed at the right hind), with the horse's nose almost touching the rider's boot, and with the right leg, cause the horse to step slowly around his front legs, describing a larger circle with his hind legs( the haunches step to the left). The rider half-halts on the outside( left) rein, whereby, most of the horse's weight is put onto the right hind leg. This exercise not only teaches the horse to obey the rider's right leg, it stretches out his left side, while forcing him to bend his right hind leg joints, and thereby strengthen that leg. The Hankensprung is a rudimentary school jump related to the courbette. The rider begins this exercise at a brisk trot, brings the horse quickly to a halt( preserving the straightness), uses the rein aids along with the driving aids to induce the horse to lift his forelegs momentarily up off of the ground. I feel blessed to have been exposed to these classical techniques that have, unfortunately, been largely forgotten with the passage of time. The Equestrian Ballet: The Pageantry of Dressage. Fortunately, the principles were preserved in Greek General Xenephon's books," Horsemanship" and" The Calvary Commander," written around 400 B.C. Grisone, the Neapolitan nobleman, is credited with the rediscovery of the art of riding and was thus known as" the father of the art of equitation" by his contemporaries. It was Antoine de Pluvinel( the student of a student of Grisone) who brought Xenephon's ideas back to France, where he eventually became Louis XIII's riding master. Pluvinel resurrected Xenephon's ideal of harmony with the horse and indoctrinated Francois Robichon de la Guerniere in these humane principles. The development of the ballet proper begins in the 16th century with medieval mounted contests of martial skill being influenced by three other factors. A procession to show off one's sumptuous clothing assumed enormous proportions in accordance with the fictional framework. The third element is the introduction of dressage and the Baroque ideal of raising the horse to a work of art through equitation, by combining complex movements to form a picture of flowing grace." The high school movements, or airs above the ground, are now only taught at the Cavalry School in Saumur in France, and at the Spanish Riding School. With the mixing of these new elements, the medieval tournament developed into a new type of equestrian festivity, the carrousel, which Watanaby-O'Kelley describes as such:. A carrousel thus consisted of a procession with floats, horsemen, footmen, and musicians usually divided into groups called quadrilles, of recited or sung speeches, of a mock combat with pre-ordained outcome and/ or of competitions involving running at the ring or at the quintain. Von Holleuffer describes it in the following passage:. Equestrian ballet( la Foule, from the Italian, la Fola) is an exercise where several riders on horseback perform various figures to the sound of instruments. This exercise was also invented by the Italians, who decorated their carousels with a great many inventions, which produced a surprising yet pleasing performance. For this exercise, well-trained, perfectly schooled horses and very talented, skillful riders are challenged, because of the difficulty, to observe the regularity of the ground, and to preserve the horse's training, position, and rhythm of the gaits. When the carousel leader signals, they must all go forward together, or halt and perform a reprise either of courbettes, or in the movement their horses have been schooled in, and with this, end. Other nations developed the ballet, in order to perfect themselves. Here, one could show off one's abilities to serve his prince with honor, and success in acquiring bravery and skill, which when dedicated to the soldiery, are inseparable. Dressage was slow to come to the German-speaking countries because of the Thirty Years War( 1618-1648), but thereafter flourished at such places as Vienna, Dresden and Munich. The manege built in Vienna by Fischer von Erlach the Younger for the Austrian Emperors was completed in 1735, and there are many accounts of equestrian ballets throughout the 18th and 19th centuries in the Austrian Empire. Examples are the occasion of the Congress of Vienna( 1814) and the entry of Franz Joseph and Elisabeth into Prague in 1854. The Spanish Riding School still performs the equitation of the 16th and 17th centuries, but without the Baroque trappings. The most famous equestrian ballet of all was performed for the wedding of Emperor Leopold I to his first wife, the Infanta Margarita Teresa, who were married in 1666. This ballet begins with an entry procession of enormous dimensions in groups with floats, an operatic introduction in which the elements debate which of them produced the lovely Maragarita, whose name means both pearl and flower. This is followed by a balletic mock-combat in seven figures, which ceases with the entry of" Eternity," whose temple lowers to earth, revealing the immortal spirits of the 12 Habsburg Kaisers. They, in turn, are followed by Leopold, mounted on his horse Speranza, and dressed( according to a 1694 document) in ancient Roman clothing with a breast plate of the finest gold, studded with jewels. The two important dimensions for any ballet are: the horizontal dimension in the patterns made on the ground, and the vertical dimension, the individual airs they perform. The caprioles were performed to a dance suite composed by court composer Johann Schmelzer. The emperor was always at the center of each figure, the culmination is the twelfth and final figure, where he stands at the center of a great star, with the other participants emanating out like rays of light. I think it would have been pertinent to mention that a horse can only be made straight by doing lots of circles and lateral work. Aside from increasing the horses strength and agility, these exercises are used to insure that a horse develops symmetrically so that he has the capability of functioning equilaterally or of being" straight. On the other hand, riding fluid, straight transitions on straight lines without benefit of a stationary outer perimeter not only teache a rider how to make ongoing minor adjustments to keep a horse straight-- keep his shoulders directly in front of his haunches so that only two legs are visible but also corrects the horse's inclination to lean on one shoulder. When it is not possible to maintain a tempo and/ or straightness on straight lines, the rider knows he or she has some homework to do: get the horse more responsive to the driving aid, or get the horse off the shoulder and comfortable putting more weight on the other shoulder through haunches-in, shoulder-in, or circles. The necessity of being well-versed in theory increases when you are left to ride on your own without the practical guidance of a trainer. From there, you can decide which school best suits you, be it the Spanish Riding School, the German, French or Spanish schools( for example). I myself have taken largely from the Spanish Riding School, but have also borrowed heavily from the Germans. I also recommend: Riding Logic by Wilhelm Mueseler, Cavaletti by Reiner Klimke, and Dressage: a Guidebook for the Road to Success by Alfred Knopfhart. Other authors to consider are Charles de Kunffy, Kurt Albrecht, Eugen Abel, Werner Habermann, Gunnar Hadlung, and Albert Brandl. Otherwise, it is difficult to see half-pass for what it is-- a travers( haunches-in) on the diagonal. Pirouettes are simply a modification of travers-- on the spot as opposed to forwards and sideways. Shouldn't every horse, assuming he has decent conformation, be capable of GP movements? Isn't the whole point of dressage to develop the horse physically and mentally to the point where he can perform the GP lessons? If one trains the horse systematically and correctly, he should, in theory, be able to carry out GP movements. The only difficulty is getting the horse to execute a movement he does in nature on cue. Even though I believe every horse can or should be capable of GP, I know that not every horse can compete at a national or international level, but that is something entirely different. The Training Level horse's frame is going to be a bit longer than a horse at, say, 2nd Level, who is expected to have developed a measure of collection. At Training Level, the horse should be able to bend equally to both sides on a 20 meter circle, be straight, which he should be able to do if he can bend equally to both sides, carry himself in balance, maintain an even contact on both reins without resistance, be relaxed in his back, exhibit correct gaits and rhythm, and be obedient. From riding with the Germans, I got a better sense of" throughness," as well as" whispering" one's will to the horse, that is thinking a transition or a slower pace, for example, and influencing him with invisible aids. This method was brought back to the front lines by the successful modern day dressage riders such as Nicole Uphoff and Anky van Grunsven. Proponents of this idea claim increased submission, faster training( and therefore sales), and a lighter feel in the reins earlier on in the training. The belief here is only the long and low method of FORWARD and downward stretching, which creates a stretch of the muscles over the withers, thereby raising and strengthening the horse's back muscles, is of value. I personally believe that one should go to the history books and see the severe flexions of Baucherism to understand that the deep and low work that you witnessed is only for VERY skilled hands( a handful in the world perhaps?) and anything else considered the opression of the horse's character and a slam on his good nature." I didn't get the feeling of harmony, lightness or even self-carriage. Trust me, no child would have been able to hold these horses up! I guess it just rubbed me the wrong way to see the horses forced into such headsets- especially in Germany where the riders have such good reputations( deservedly?)       Document Excerpt: The word dresage has its roots in the French word dresser meaning to train or straighten out, and it could not be more appropriate. The objectives of dressage are twofold- to train a horse so that its temperament and aptitude virtually match the rider's, and to improve the horse's ability to provide propulsion by training it to transfer weight away from its forehand. The forehead is the natural state of a wild horse, but when you burden it with a saddle and a rider you have to centralize the distribution of the additional load. Dresage techniques encourage a horses to transfer all weight to its hind legs and then go forward freely and rhythmically with the weight still set on the hind legs. All movements must be performed in precise relation to a set of points on the sides of the arena, and any step that is not absolutely geometric is severely punished by the judges. Riders frequently envision themselves as being caught in a web threaded with straight lines, arcs, waves and circles that they must ride with mathematical precision. Among other things, the judges look carefully at how the foreplay rise when the pace shortens, they examine the canter as the horse changes from left-handed to right-handed leads with narrowing distances, they look to see whether the hind legs make a second set of tracks, and whether the horse can move in a straight line even though its body is set at an angle. The most spectacular segment generally is the Piaffe in which the horse trots on a spot while raising and lowering its legs in diagonally opposed pairs.

      Document Excerpt: HOW TO WATCH A DRESSAGE SHOW. This guide on" HOW TO WATCH A DRESSAGE SHOW" was compiled in 1980 by the OTTAWA AREA DRESSAGE GROUP OF CADORA. Reproduction by other Dressage Groups, Show Committees and interested parties is encouraged; any proposed changes must be referred back to OADG before publication. These are graded according to the ability of the horse, and start with a group class, followed by sole performances at levels of increasing difficulty. Georges the first test published by the Federation d Equestre Internationale, the worldwide equestrian sports governing body. As a horse improves and gets higher scores over a period of time, he is promoted or upgraded and is required to compete at the next highest level. Rides are divided into movements( there 12 to 14 in the average Preliminary test). Each movement is marked separately, on a 0-10 scale, like figure skating or gymnastics. The tests from Basic I through to Medium 3 are written by the Dressage Advisory Committee of the Canadian Equestrian Federation; above Medium 3, by the FEI. The tests are made up of patterns and changes of pace which are performed at the various letters around the arena, and are symmetrical( the same movements are performed in each direction). The tests are not composed of" tricks" to be learned automatically; the object of dressage training is to develop the horse physically and mentally, in harmony with his own natural ways of moving and thinking, and these tests are" checkpoints" to display the level of balance, strength and obedience he has reached in his training. At informal( schooling) shows you may see riders wearing light coloured breeches, tweed or summer riding jackets, hunt caps and brown high boots. Arabs, Morgans, Quarter Horses, Thoroughbreds, European breeds and every possible mixture thereof have all competed successfully in the dressage ring. At the more advanced levels, horses and riders have usually begun to specialize in dressage competition as a separate discipline. The majority of Grand Prix horses in the world today are from the European" sport" breeds( Trakehner, Hanoverian, Holsteiner); this is perhaps because dressage is a newer sport in North America, and our breeding programs have not had as much time to produce suitable individuals for high-level dressage. However, this situation is rapidly changing, and there are already many North American Thoroughbreds, Quarter Horses and other breeds represented at the higher levels. The horse should move forward rhythmically, with no impression of stiffness, discomfort or disobedience. There may be an information centre at the show you are attending; leave your name with the Show Secretary for further contact; show officials will be glad to answer your questions( perhaps not at the beginning or end of the day, when they will be rather hurried). The object of dressage is the harmonious development of the physique and ability of the horse. As a result it makes the horse calm, supple, loose and flexible, but also confident, attentive and keen, thus achieving perfect understanding with his rider-Federation d'Equestre international. Separate Junior classes are usually provided at the Preliminary/ Novice level, and the Group classes may also be divided. At this level, the horse must perform smoothly and obediently the simple patterns and transitions( changes of pace and direction) required. He must be" accepting the bit"- showing no resistance to the hands constant light contact with his mouth through the reins. At this stage, the horse's mental and physical development through training has just begun; but without correct Basic I work, further progress is impossible. Here the lengthened stride is introduced at the trot and canter, in preparation for the extended paces of the higher levels. Both lengthened stride and extension mean that the horse takes longer steps without increasing the tempo or speed of the gait; but in the extension, the hindquarters( which supply the driving force at all paces) are engaged and are carrying more of the horse's weight, with much more power, elevation, and buoyancy in the performance. The horse is expected to be" on the bit", or" on the aids"; this means in the condition of balance, suppleness and confidence, appropriate to the level of the test he is to perform, and ready and able to respond to any signal from his rider. In this level, more accuracy is demanded transitions must be made when the rider's shoulder is exactly at the letter indicated. The hindquarters must begin to engage to carry more of the horse's weight in preparation for the extension and collection of the Medium Division. Circles of 10 meters at the trot and 15 meters at the canter are performed, as well as simple changes of canter lead through the trot; turns on the forehand and transitions from the trot to halt also demonstrate the increased obedience, strength and ability of the horse. While Basic level work is a necessary part of the training of every saddle horse, whatever its destination in life, most horses you will see in the Medium levels will probably be involved in dressage competition as an end in itself. Now the spectator will say," That looks like a dressage horse", there will be a difference in the outline and muscling of the horse and an increased lightness, power and beauty in his way of going. If the basic training has been correct, this" medium frame" results from the establishment of collection; the driving power of the hindquarters is now fully available to the horse and fully under the direction of the rider. This results in lightness and mobility of the forehand, which looks more elevated in contrast to the lowered hindquarters. The horse is expected to show all the variations within each gait: working, collected( shorter, higher steps, with the forehand very elevated and the hindquarters fully engaged), extended; and medium(" round" and less ground-covering than the extended pace). For the first time, the horse must perform the rein-back, counter-canter( cantering on the left lead for instance, while moving to the right), simple changes of the canter lead through the walk, and half-pirouette at the walk( the forehand moves in half-circle around the haunches which act as a pivot). Now increased mental and physical demand are made on the horse( and rider), leading to the ultimate test of artistic equitation, the Olympic Grand Prix de Dressage. " Tempo changes"( flying changes of lead in sequence after a specified number of strides) are begun. : Here the full pirouette and flying changes of lead every two strides are required. In half-pass( shown here performed at the trot) the horse moves both forward and sideways, bent toward the direction of movement. Maple Magnum is a confirmed Grand Prix horse, and is showing a great deal of sideways movement in his half pass. It's more important that the quality of the gait be maintained than that the horse scuttles sideways. Although it's difficult to tell in the animation above, Maple Magnum is moving correctly with his forehand slightly in advance of his haunches. At this point is seems that only Netscape 2.0 and above, Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 and above, and a few other obscure browsers, support animated gifs.
